Seniors Play Big Role As Softball Tops Columbia On Walk-Off

ITHACA, N.Y. – Rebecca Kubena's walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning made a winner of Maddie Orcutt and their three classmates on Senior Day, handing Cornell a 10-9 extra-inning victory over Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field. The win improved Cornell to 13-223 (8-10 Ivy), while the Lions closed their season with a 21-19 mark (13-8 Ivy).

Seniors played a huge role as the Big Red twice rallied from two-run deficits to salvage a win in the three-game series. Kubena was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, two runs scored and the walk-off flyout to center that plated Madeline Avery. Orcutt picked up her first win of the season in the circle after shutting down Columbia over the final two innings, surrendering just one hit and no runs with three strikeouts. Additionally, Megan Murray, Zoe Hernandez and Tori Togashi each had hits, while Murray's sacrifice bunt in the eighth led to a throwing error on the Lions, moving the winning run to third with one out.

Erin Rockstroh was 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI and Kate Jencarelli was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI at the plate for the Big Red.

Columbia had 14 hits and slammed two more home runs, with Taylor Troutt and Alexandra Yule both hitting big flys – Yule with a grand slam to stake the Lions to a 6-4 lead in the fifth.

Orcutt escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run in the seventh to save the game for Cornell. She induced a pair of infield groundouts to get out of the inning.

Cornell scored a pair of runs in both the first and the second innings, with Togashi and Jencarelli plating runs on singles in the first and Rockstroh doubling to center in the second to drive in the other two. Columbia scored eight of its runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but both times Cornell rallied.

Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Jencarelli hit her second home run of the weekend and third in a Cornell uniform to put the home team back ahead at 7-6. The Lions immediately scored three to go back up 9-7, but the Big Red scratched together the tying runs in the bottom half of the frame. A two-run triple down the leftfield line scored Sarah and Megan Murray in succession to knot the score.

Troutt and Amber Swinarski both went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, with Troutt also driving in two. Yule was 2-for-4 with the grand slam.
