ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman
Alafia Ayeni won in both singles and doubles, but the men's tennis team suffered its second 4-3 loss of the weekend after Sunday's match against Penn at Reis Tennis Center.
The teams split the six singles matches after the doubles point was essentially decided in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 position. Ayeni and sophomore
Lev Kazakov had the lone doubles victory for the Big Red at the No. 1 spot.
Four third sets were needed to decided singles matches after the Quakers won at No. 1 in straight sets and sophomore
Joseph McAllister prevailed at No. 6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior
Jake Hansen followed suit at No. 5, winning his fifth straight singles match to reach completion. Like Hansen, Ayeni also won in three sets from the No. 2 spot.
Cornell (7-9, 0-2 Ivy League), which entered the weekend ranked 47th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will return to Reis Tennis Center for a pair of big league matches next weekend. The Big Red hosts 33rd-ranked Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Saturday, then 28th-ranked Harvard at 1 p.m. Sunday.
