Softball Closes Season With Series Win Over Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell softball team ended its season on Sunday afternoon with an Ivy League series win at Princeton, taking the rubber game of the three-game set 1-0 at Class of 1895 Field. The Big Red finish the 2018 campaign 15-25 (10-11 Ivy), while the Tigers fell to 10-29 (8-13 Ivy).

Senior Tori Togashi's sacrifice fly scored teammate Megan Murray with the lone run in the first inning and Katie Lew and the defense did the rest to close out the year on a high note. Lew scattered six hits without allowing a walk, throwing just 65 pitches in the complete game shutout masterpiece.

Cornell's offense scratched out just four hits, though three came off the bats on seniors playing their final game. Murray had a double, Rebecca Kubena had a triple and Madeline AVery and Tori Togashi both singled to round out Cornell at the plate against Princeton's Ashley LaGuardia. The Tiger hurler took the hard-luck loss, surrendering just one one run and four hits over her seven innings.

Cornell finished two games better than a year ago and four games ahead of 2017 in conference play, taking fifth place after being picked last in the preseason. The Big Red's five seniors also wrapped up their careers with a series win at longtime rival Princeton. Murray wrapped up her career in the top 10 in school history in doubles (fourth, 44), batting average (seventh, .352) and hits (eighth, 179). Rebecca Kubena hit .350 in her final season while posting a perfect fielding percentage on 138 attempts, the fourth-most chances in a season without an error at Cornell. Maddie Orcutt won 21 games in the circle with 220 strikeouts, good for 10th in school history. Like Kubena, Togashi had a career year as a senior after hitting .320 with four home runs and 24 RBI. Zoe Hernandez played in 87 career games with 46 starts and had 27 RBI in just 98 at bats over her four years.
