PHILADELPHIA –
Chrissy Mayer made six saves – including five in the opening 25 minutes – but Saint Joseph's scored midway through the second half to secure a 1-0 decision over the women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Sean Sweeney Field.
Cornell (1-5) had a scoring chance in the 15th minute when
Juliana Comer intercepted a pass in the middle third and immediately started a counter attack with a ball up the right flank to
Carolyn Ruoff. She had enough space from the defender to muscle a cross into the box, where
Jessica Ritchie challenged and the ball popped back to 12 yards out from outside the right post. Comer was first to run onto it, but her shot went across the goal mouth and wide of the far post.
Saint Joseph's (5-2-2) finally broke through in the 67th minute on Aleksa Peev's third goal of the season. An attempted attack entering the box was broken up by a swarming Big Red back line, but an attempted clearance to the touch line took a hard bounce of the Hawks' Taylor Ryan and caromed straight to a wide-open Peev near the penalty spot. She settled the ball and finish high inside the far post against a helpless Mayer.
Cornell returns home for its final contest before Ivy League play, when it hosts Albany at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Berman Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
