Beyond The Box Score: Colgate Game

10/21/2019 11:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Here are some notes from Saturday's 21-20 loss to Colgate.

The Fumble Return

  • Jelani Taylor's 87-yard interception return for a touchdown was the first Big Red fumble return for a score since James White took one back 14 yards at home against Yale in 2014.
  • It was the first defensive touchdown of any kind since David Jones' 48-yard interception return last year against Sacred Heart.
  • The 87 yards is the longest fumble return by a Cornell player since 1946, surpassing an 82-yard return by Jarrod Watson-Lewis against Bucknell in 2013.

Player Notes

  • Garrett Patla became the first Cornell kicker to connect on multiple field goals since Nickolas Null hit three, including the game winner in the final minute, in a win at Princeton in 2017.
  • With his 57 kick return yards, David Jones jumped into the top 10 in school history with his career total of 1,064 yards (No. 8), surpassing Chris Allen '98 (1,008), Timothy LaBeau '77 (1,010) and Gary Wood '64 (1.048) along the way.
  • Sophomore Eric Stoxstill-Diggs posted his first career interception in his second varsity start.
  • Jake Stebbins is the first Cornell player to post multiple forced fumbles in a season since Kurt Frimel separated the pigskin from three ball carriers during the 2016 campaign.
  • He's also the first freshman with at least 5.0 tackles for loss since Nick Gesualdi in 2014 (5.0)
  • Over his last three games, Stebbins has been credited with 23 tackles, 4.5 for a loss, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
  • Junior SK Howard had his first career receiving touchdown with his 5-yard grab in the third quarter.
  • Over his last two games, Phazione McClurge has 11 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown after hauling in just five passes for 53 yards over the team's first three contests.
  • With his 78 receiving yards against Colgate, Owen Peters has 944 yards on 75 receptions. Those totals rank 27th and 29th, respectively, in school history.

Team Notes

  • It was the second time in four seasons that Cornell and Colgate played a one-point nailbiter, with the Big Red capturing a 39-38 victory over the Raiders on the road in 2016.
  • With the win, Colgate tied the all-time series at 49-49-3, the first time the series has been tied since the first-ever meeting before the Big Red began a 13-0-1 start, holding the lead ever since.
  • After going 3-for-4 on fourth downs against Colgate, Cornell has now been successful on 9-of-11 fourth-down attempts.
  • The school record for fourth down conversions in a season is 17 in 1993 (17-of-28, 61 percent) (dating back to 1990).
  • Cornell embarked on a 15-play drive that ate up 5:37 in the third, the most plays in any drive since a 16-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter last season against Penn.
