Men's Soccer Looks to Bounce Back Against Albany

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell aims to bounce back against non-conference opponent Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 22 following a 3-1 loss to No. 24-ranked Yale last Friday. Albany enters Tuesday's contest as winners of four straight, improving its overall record to 7-4-1 for the season. The Great Danes are 7-1-1 over the last nine matches played.

Cornell men's soccer dropped a tough match last Friday night, falling to Ivy League leader and No. 24-ranked Yale by a final score of 3-1. The Big Red took momentum into halftime with a late first half goal, but Yale's goal in the second stanza proved too much for Cornell to overcome. With a loss on Friday, Cornell drops to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Ivy League, while Yale remains unbeaten at 9-0-2 overall. Despite the loss, Cornell out-shot Yale 14-8 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal. Yale had more opportunities off of set pieces however with seven corner kicks to Cornell's three.
 
Down 2-0 before halftime, Cornell gained momentum heading into the break when junior Vardhin Manoj scored his third goal of the season, and his third goal in the last four matches with less than two minutes remaining. Sophomore Jonah Kagen kept his eyes on Manoj in the box, who put one touch on the ball, turned and fired with his left foot to beat Yale's keeper. The Big Red had its momentum stopped in the 70th minute when Yale took a 3-1 lead off the boot of its leading goal-scorer, Miguel Yuste.

ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell owns a 7-4 overall record in 2019 with a spotless 4-0 mark at home and a 3-4 record on the road. The Big Red rank No. 8 nationally in shots per game with 16.82 and are ranked No. 10 in shots on goal with 7.18 per game. Cornell is still searching for a more consistent scoring output, despite ranking No. 39 in Divison I with 1.91 goals per game.

Junior Harry Fuller is the team leader in points (10) and goals (4), while also chipping in with two assists. Tied for the team-high in assists are senior George Pedlow and first year Brandon Morales with three each. Cornell has distributed the goal scoring this season with 11 different goal scorers. Seniors Ryan Bayne, John Scearce and Pedlow, juniors Tyler Bagley, Charles Touche, Vardhin Manoj and Fuller, sophomore Emeka Eneli, and freshmen Will Citron, Griffin Garrard, and Morales have done the scoring for Cornell. Eneli and Manoj are tied for the second-most goals on the team with three each.

In goal, senior Ryan Shellow has started each of the last 10 matches and possesses a 7-3 record to show for it. Shellow has a 1.17 goals against average and owns a .667 save percentage alongside five shutouts so far in 2019.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST ALBANY
Albany leads the brief all-time series against Cornell, 3-1-0. The Great Danes defeated Cornell last season on Oct. 23 by a final score of 1-0 in overtime. Albany and Cornell first met in 1999, with Albany winning the first meeting, 3-2, in overtime. The Big Red picked up its lone win over the Great Danes in 2007, a 3-2 overtime victory.

ABOUT THE GREAT DANES
Albany is led in scoring by Austin DaSilva, who's 10 goals leads the team and the American East Conference. Haflidi Sigurdarson leads the team in assists with three while also contributing two goals. Five members of the Great Dane squad have scored twice and nine players have scored at least one goal. DaSilva tops the nation in game-winning goals (5) and ranks No. 9 overall in total goals.

The Great Danes average just 11.58 shots per game, ranking No. 122 in the country, but do a lot with the shots they take ranking No. 30 in scoring offense with 2.00 goals per game. Albany typically likes to take an early lead over its opponents, outscoring teams 12-4 in the first half. Teams typically do most of the scoring against Albany in the second half where the Great Danes have conceded 10 goals this season.

In goal for Albany, Isac Hjerten is 6-4-1 with a 1.15 goals against average and a .772 save percentage, tallying 44 saves and two shutouts.
