ALBANY, N.Y. – Heartbreak struck the Big Red on Tuesday as the Cornell men's soccer team was defeated by Albany, 2-1, due in part to a Great Dane goal in the final 15 seconds of the match.
Cornell (7-5, 1-2 Ivy League) was out-shot by the Great Danes, 13-11 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal. After having just one look on net in the first half, Albany (8-4-1) put six shots on goal in the second including its two goals. First year goalkeeper
Brady McSwain made his second career start in net for Cornell making five saves.
Senior
Brady Dickens opened the scoring for Cornell on Tuesday night, fighting through contact to beat the Albany goalkeeper in the 30th minute following a pass from senior
John Scearce. It's Dickens' first goal of the season and his first goal since his freshman year in 2016. Neither side had found much offense to that point, with Albany mustering just two shots that were sent through the football uprights.
Albany knotted things up at one goal apiece in the 59th minute with a goal scored off a deflection. McSwain dove to save a shot off the foot of Sam Philip, but Andrew Weiner was there to clean things up and put the Great Danes on the board.
McSwain made a huge save for Cornell towards the end of regulation, stopping a hard Albany shot on a breakaway in the 89th minute, but disaster struck for Cornell less than a minute later. A second Albany breakaway set-up by a controversial no-call led to a game-winning goal for the Great Danes off the boot of Kaio DaSilva.
