St. Thomas Aquinas Holds Off Sprint Football, 39-19

Box Score HILLBURN, N.Y. - J.R. Quinones and Luke Verzella each scored a touchdown but it was not enough as St. Thomas Aquinas (STAC) left the field with the 39-19 victory, Saturday evening.
 
The Spartans dominated the first quarter with two unanswered touchdowns. Ernest Stallworth received a pass from Kiel McKenzie for both scores. STAC continued their point streak with a third touchdown in the fifth minute of the second quarter. 
 
With 1:31 left in the first half, Cornell got on the board when Ben Finkelstein kicked a successful field goal attempt. The Big Red followed its first points with a touchdown when Verzella received a 51-yard pass from Harrison Nicholas. Cornell entered halftime down, 21-10.
 
The Big Red continued scoring points in the third quarter with a team safety in the fifth minute but the Spartans answered with a touchdown in the air at 2:25. 
 
The fourth quarter saw three touchdowns total. STAC players Isiah Davis and Matt Yuvienco ran in two for the Spartans while the Big Red scored the last touchdown for the night. Quinones ran the ball in from the one-yard line to bring the score to 39-19.
 
The Cornell defense was not slacking with a few outstanding plays. In total, Matthew Luebke was able to complete 3.0 tackles for a loss of 19 yards total and 1.0 sacks for a loss of eight yards. Matt Peck made one interception for 14 yards, while Collin Stockton led the defense with nine total tackles.
 
Quinones led the team with 92 net yards ran, while Connor Phelps followed him with 52 net yards. Nicholas was the team's sole quarterback, throwing for 51 yards. 
 
The Big Red returns to action on Friday, October 18 as it hosts Mansfield University on Schoellkopf Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
