ITHACA, N.Y. – In a tightly contested contest, Cornell men's soccer defeated Colgate on Tuesday, Oct. 8 by a final tally of 1-0. Freshman
Griffin Garrard scored the first goal of his career in the 75th minute goal to bring victory for the Big Red at home.
Tuesday's win marks the sixth straight victory over the Raiders for Cornell (6-3-0), who now own a 31-8-6 all-time record over Colgate (2-6-4) at home. It's Cornell's 60th overall victory over Colgate as the Big Red own a 60-23-7 advantage dating back to the series opener in 1921.
Cornell out-shot the Raiders, 11-3, overall and 3-1 in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper needed to make just one save en route to his fourth shutout of the season. Shellow now owns a 6-2 record between the pipes for the Big Red. Cornell also saw a significant advantage in corner kick opportunities with eight to just three for Colgate.
A defensive battle saw Cornell hold a 5-0 shot advantage in the first half, but with none falling on target. The Big Red opened the contest with three opportunities in the first 10 minutes of action before Colgate's defense settled in.
More defensive action ensued in the second half, with junior
Charles Touche's shot in the 66th minute representing the first shot on goal of the day for either side. Cornell finally broke the ice in the 75th minute with Garrard's goal. Garrard fielded a header from fellow first year,
Brandon Morales, and used his left foot to send the ball home at the far post. Morales is now the team leader in assists this season with three and ranks second on the team in total points with five.
Colgate's offense started to get going late with a shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the shot was easily saved by Shellow. Searching for an equalizer, Colgate had two corner kick opportunities in the 83rd minute that were stuffed by the Cornell defense.
Up Next: Ivy League play resumes on Saturday, Oct. 12 when Cornell welcomes Harvard for a 4 p.m. match from Berman Field. Harvard has yet to find the win column thus far in 2019 with an 0-6-1 record. The Crimson lost its last match against UMass Lowell, 1-0. Harvard is led in scoring by Duncan Southerland, who in three games has amassed five points (two goals, one assist). Alfred Perez is tied for the team-high in goals scored with two. Harvard has a young crop of goalkeepers, playing a pair of first years in Oskar Nilsson and Bobby Harraka.
