Sprint Football Announces Team Awards

ITHACA, N.Y. - To close out the 2019 season, the Cornell sprint football coaches presented seven different awards to 14 different people as the team banquet.
 
The awards and winners are as follows:
 
The Lt. Donald Sussman Most Valuable Player Award is presented to two players who have distinguished themselves as excellent football players. The 2019 award was presented to seniors Connor Young (offense) and Peter Sanchez (defense). Young totaled 67 yards, 19 rushing and 48 in the air, while Sanchez ranked third on the team with 25 tackles. 
 
The Al Baldini Outstanding Senior Award is presented to outstanding senior players who have contributed the most to the team over their Cornell sprint football career. The 2019 award was presented to Will Griffen (offense) and Marcus Weeks (defense). Over the course of his career, Griffen has totaled 1,410 yards including 872 rush yards, 493 reception yards, and 45 made while passing. He has scored 15 touchdowns, running in 12 of the scores. The graduating running back can also play defense and has totaled 30 tackles, 25 of which came from his junior year. Weeks collected 73 tackles throughout his career, including 61 on his own. Both Griffen and Weeks were chosen as the 2019 sprint football captains.
 
The Rick Casselman Coaches Award is presented to the senior who has exhibited unselfish dedication to the Cornell sprint football program throughout his football career. The 2019 award was presented to Reed Fratt (offense) and Connell Rae (offense). Rae participated in five games and hundreds of practices while Fratt had 114 reception yards.
 
The Clayton Axtell Most Improved Player Award is awarded to the senior who has demonstrated the greatest improvement as a player over the course of his Cornell sprint football career. The 2019 award goes to Jean Turban (defense) and Brandon Risley (special teams). Risley has served as the main punter for the Big Red for two years during his career. Due to an injury, he was unable to compete during his senior year but consistently supported his team from the sideline. The senior gained 2,114 yards from 59 punts during his sophomore and junior seasons. Turban opened his Cornell career with one tackle in three games during his freshman season. During his final season with the Big Red, Turban collected 13 tackles in five games. 
 
The Paul N. Hunt Citizenship Award is awarded to the senior who simultaneously exemplified the qualities of both a model citizen and student-athlete. The 2019 award was presented to Ben Finkelstein (special teams) and Julian Korfine (defense). Finkelstein has served as the main offensive kicker for the Big Red all four years of his career. He has gone made 60% of his 20 field goal attempts. With 87 kickoffs, FInkelstein gained 4,376 for Cornell and has earned 51 extra points. Korfine joined the team for just his senior season and earned eight tackles for the Big Red.
 
The Tom McGory Award is awarded to the senior who exemplified the hard-nosed style of play that distinguishes himself as a Tom McGory kind of player. The 2019 award went to Collin Stockton (defense) and Jonathan Klobus (offense). Klobus participated in six games in 2019, while Stockton contributed 56 tackles throughout the last three seasons. 
 
The A.L. Morris Award for Diligence is awarded to a senior in recognition of his inspirational spirit and determination throughout his Cornell sprint football career. The 2019 award was presented to George Orellana (defense) and Shadman Khan (defense). Orellana participated in six games over three seasons while Khan participated in eight games over four years. Both Orellana and Khan earned one tackle in their careers. 
 
Will Griffen earned the single game ball after scoring four of the five touchdowns against Alderson Broaddus (Sept. 14).
