ALBANY, N.Y. – The riveting finishes in the all-time series between the Cornell and UAlbany women's soccer teams continued on Sunday – but for the first time, it was the Great Danes that ended up on top thanks to a late goal. Haley Summers struck in the 88th minute, and UAlbany secured a 1-0 victory at Casey Stadium to hand Cornell its first loss of the season.
While officially out-possessed by UAlbany (3-3-1) in the first half, Cornell (4-1) had the better of the early scoring chances against a Great Danes team that has won the America East tournament in three of the last four seasons. The Big Red had two corner kicks inside the opening two minutes, and sophomore
Shelby Wray took a shot from distance that required a save from UAlbany goalkeeper Sophia Chen in the seventh minute.
The better chances came from senior
Kennedy Yearby a little later in the first half. The first came in the 17th minute as she challenged defenders from the right side of the Great Danes' penalty area, maneuvering toward the middle before taking a left-footed shot that deflected off a defender and required a diving grab from Chen to her right. An even better chance came in the 28th minute, when Yearby's header from the penalty spot bounded just wide of the post to Chen's left.
UAlbany took territorial advantage in the second half, with Cornell mustering just one shot toward goal in the closing 45 minutes. The Big Red still remained on track to post its fourth straight clean sheet until the waning moments. The Great Danes served a ball into the top of the Cornell penalty area out from the right post, only to see neither team deal with it cleanly. After the ball pinballed around a few times, Summers got a foot to it from eight yards out and put it past helpless freshman goalkeeper
Nicole Shulman with just 2:20 left on the clock.
The loss was Cornell's second all-time with UAlbany in a six-game series that saw the Big Red record some exhilarating results in recent meetings. Yearby scored a tying goal in the 89th minute of a 2-2 deadlock last year in Ithaca. The next-most recent meeting between the teams was in 2013, when Cornell took a wild 5-4 affair thanks to a goal from
Brenna Mockler '16 with 7.8 seconds left.
In its penultimate non-league game before the start of Ivy League play, Cornell faces another America East opponent at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when regional rival Binghamton visits Berman Field in Ithaca.
