Men's Soccer to Oppose Canisius on Saturday

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's soccer is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Buffalo, N.Y. for a 4 p.m. match against the Canisius College Golden Griffins. Cornell is aiming to bounce back for a much needed victory after falling to Syracuse in overtime on Tuesday, Sept. 17 by a final score of 3-2.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite two first-half goals on Tuesday night, the Cornell men's soccer team was upended by Syracuse in overtime, by a final score of 3-2. Following a scoreless second half of action it was Syracuse's Noah Singelmann that hit pay dirt in the 96th minute to provide victory for the Orange.

Cornell had more chances on goal Tuesday, placing five shots on net to four for Syracuse. The Big Red also saw an advantage in total shots, leading the Orange 13-8 overall and 8-3 in a scoreless second half.

Senior's George Pedlow and Ryan Bayne did the scoring for Cornell. Bayne's goal was his first since scoring the game-winning overtime goal in a 4-3 victory over Colgate on Oct. 10, 2017.

ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell owns a 2-2 overall record thus far in 2019 following wins over then No. 16-ranked Michigan State (2-1, OT) and Fairleigh Dickinson (1-0). The Big Red have played just one match at home, as Saturday's match against Canisius will mark its fourth road contest of the season. The Big Red is coming off a hard fought, 3-2, overtime loss against Syracuse on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Junior Harry Fuller and sophomore Emeka Eneli are tied for the team-high in points with three apiece. Each has contributed one goal and one assist this season. First year Brandon Morales is the team-leader in assists with two through his first four collegiate matches. Cornell has distributed the goal scoring this season with five different goal scorers. Fuller, Eneli, Pedlow, Bayne and first year Will Citron have done the scoring for the Big Red.

In goal, senior Ryan Shellow has started each of the last three matches and possesses a 2-1 record to show for it. Shellow has a 1.28 goals against average and owns a .636 save percentage, saving seven of the 11 shots on goal he has faced in 2019.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST CANISIUS
In a series that dates back to the 2009 season, the overall series between the two sides is knotted up a 1-1-1. Canisius won the last meeting with a 2-1 victory in Ithaca, N.Y. on Sept. 16, 2017. Cornell's last victory over the Golden Griffins came on Sept. 19, 2010 by a final score of 1-0 in the second ever meeting between the two teams. Saturday marks the second time Cornell has traveled to Buffalo to face Canisius, with each of the last two matches being played in Ithaca.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
The Golden Griffins enter Saturday's match with a 1-4 overall record after a 3-0 loss to St. Bonaventure on Tuesday night in Olean, N.Y. Canisius has losses to Bucknell (4-1), Northern Kentucky (2-0), Utah Valley (4-3, 2OT) and St. Bonaventure (3-0), with its lone win of the season coming against Binghamton on Sept. 6 by a final tally of 2-1. Opponents have score 2.80 goals per game against Canisius on 15.8 shots per contest.

Troy Brady is the teams leading scorer with two goals and one assist, scoring the game-winning goal against Binghamton on Sept. 6. Federico Mereto and Julius Schoner are tied for the team-high in assists with two apiece. Mereto is second on the team in scoring with four points.

Goalkeeping duties have been shared in Buffalo, with Fabio D'Errico making three starts (1-2-0) and Tom Crosby making two (0-2-0). D'Errico has the better numbers in net with a 2.23 goals against average and a .741 save percentage.

UP NEXT
Cornell returns home to Charles F. Berman Field on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. match against Siena. Siena is currently 2-4 overall with wins over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Vermont. The Saints have losses to Lafayette, Army, Bryant and Stony Brook. Siena is close to starting a three-game road trip that features matches against Sacred Heart (Sept. 21), Cornel (Sept. 24) and Canisius (Oct. 2). The Saints are led in scoring by Alejandro Riquelme who has two goals and five assists on the season.
