Men's Soccer Bounces Back With Victory Over Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Earning a much needed victory, the Cornell men's soccer team got back into the win column on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Canisius from the Demske Sports Complex. Junior Harry Fuller led the program to victory in Buffalo, notching a brace with one goal in each half, increasing his season total to three goals, a team-high.

Cornell (3-2) out-shot the Golden Griffins by a final tally of 14-10 overall and 6-4 on shots on goal. Canisius (1-5) had its defense tested often on Saturday as Cornell's offensive attack was unrelenting, particularly during the second half of action.

Fuller gave the Big Red its early 1-0 advantage with a successful penalty kick opportunity in the 29th minute. Canisius' Killian Panis tackled senior John Scearce in the box to set up the PK chance for Fuller. It's the first penalty kick Cornell has attempted and converted in 2019.

Canisius was unable to muster up much of an offensive response in the first half, registering just one shot, as opposed to five for the Big Red.

Fuller kept the momentum going for Cornell in the second half as he put the Big Red up 2-0 with a goal in the 48th minute. Senior George Pedlow put a touch on the ball in the box and redirected it to Fuller, setting up the shot. Fuller used the pass from Pedlow to bury the ball in the top right corner of Canisius' goal.

Canisius was nearly able to cut its deficit in the 57th minute after Cornell was called for a handball in the box. Sophomore Tate Keir tried to block a cross attempt with his body, but the ball glanced off his arm, leading to the Golden Griffins' attempt. Goalkeeper Ryan Shellow held strong on his line however, making the save on Troy Brady's shot attempt and preserving his shutout.

Shellow (3-1) made four saves on Saturday as he collected his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his career.

Up Next: Cornell returns home to Charles F. Berman Field on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. match against Siena. Siena is currently 2-4 overall with wins over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Vermont. The Saints have losses to Lafayette, Army, Bryant and Stony Brook. Siena is close to starting a three-game road trip that features matches against Sacred Heart (Sept. 21), Cornell (Sept. 24) and Canisius (Oct. 2). The Saints are led in scoring by Alejandro Riquelme who has two goals and five assists on the season.
