David Jones has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. It is Jones' second weekly award in his career after taking Defensive Player of the Week once last season.
Jones was credited with five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception and three pass breakups in the win. The two-time All-Ivy cornerback earned his first interception of the year and eighth of his career in the third quarter to set up the Big Red's final touchdown of the day. In the third quarter alone, Jones had a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and interception, then broke up two passes and had a tackle for loss on Marist's final two drives of the day as the Big Red held on to earn its first season-opening win since 2016.
Jones broke up a pass in the end zone during the second of two goal-line stands that saw Cornell avoid a Marist score on five plays inside the 1-yard line. His five tackles ranked second on the team as the Big Red limited Marist just 220 yards of offense, including just two rushing yards on 20 carries. Cornell also limited the Red Foxes to eight first downs. In addition, Jones returned five punts for a total of 52 yards and one kickoff 12 yards.
Cornell will face preseason Ivy favorite Yale on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Yale Bowl.
