ITHACA, N.Y. -- Here are some notes from Saturday's 27-16 loss to preseason Ivy League favorite Yale.
 

The Ivy Opener

  • Cornell closed the 64th official season of Ivy League play with a 28-39-2 record in in conference lid-lifters.
  • The Big Red has now faced Yale 20 times (each of the last 20 seasons) in Ivy openers with a 6-14 mark.  
     

Team Notes

  • The 327 yards Yale posted is the lowest by a winning opponent since Columbia compiled 235 at Columbia in 2018.
  • Over the last three contests dating back to last year, the Cornell defense has surrendered just three offensive touchdowns, 265.7 yards per game and 96.3 rushing yards on 2.6 yards per carry (113-289).
  • Opponents are now 0-for-5 on fourth down through two games, the first time the Big Red has stopped five opponents on fourth down over two games since doing so against Harvard (0-for-3) and Colgate (0-for-2) last season.
  • Cornell, meanwhile, is 4-for-4 on fourth down over two games for the first time since doing so against Dartmouth (1-for-1) and Columbia (3-for-3) during the 2016 campaign.
    

The Delonte Harrell-Richie Kenney Connection

  • Harrell caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, both coming from Kenney.
  • The 134 receiving yards are the most by a running back since Scott Oliaro had 139 against Penn in 1992 and are the second most in school history.
  • Entering the day, Harrell had six receptions for six yards in his career.
  • Their 89-yard hookup was the fourth-longest in school history and the longest since Nathan Ford, who will be inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend, connected with Bryan Walters for 96 yards against Dartmouth in 2008.
  • Kenney became the first Cornell quarterback to throw multiple touchdowns in their initial start under center since James Few connected on two in a 24-9 win against Columbia in 2013.
 

Player Notes

  • Harold Coles' 141 yards tied his career high (at Brown in 2018).
  • He ended the day with 1,501 rushing yards, good for No. 16 all-time at Cornell.
  • It was Coles' seventh career 100-yard game, tied with Dan Malone '75 for eighth in school history.
  • After rushing for just eight yards on three carries in the first quarter, Coles had 13 carries for 133 yards the rest of the way.
  • He had five rushes of at least 10 yards during the contest.
  • For his career, Coles had 307 yards on 32 carries with three total touchdowns against Yale, good for 9.6 yards per carry.
  • Eric Gallman has a catch in all 12 career games at wide receiver.
  • Nickolas Null had three punts of more thant 50 yards, becoming the first Cornellian to have three 50-yard punts in the same game since Chris Fraser also had three against Princeton in 2016.
