Women's Soccer Continues Hot Start With 1-0 Win at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Sophomore Jadyn Matthews scored her second goal of the season early in the second half, and freshman Nicole Shulman made four saves for her first collegiate shutout in the Cornell women's soccer team's 1-0 victory Friday afternoon against Bucknell at Emmitt Field. With the victory, Cornell is off to just its second 3-0 start since 2005.

After the teams traded jabs primarily in the midfield for the opening 45 minutes, Bucknell (1-4) threatened early in the second half. Just within the first couple of minutes, Shulman got her hand to a Gabby Bair shot on target, then Bair had another chance that hit the crossbar.

Sophomore Evanthia Spyredes then took a couple cracks at goal that went wide, but in the 57th minute she sent a long ball to the right side. Matthews got on the end of it, then moved toward the top of the arc before booting a shot inside the far post. After spending most of her collegiate debut season in the defensive midfield, Matthews now has two goals in just three games as a forward.

The result gives Cornell three straight victories for the first time since 2014, when it topped Massachusetts, Marist and VMI before an overtime loss to Temple. The Big Red returns home for its next match at 1 p.m. Sunday against St. Bonaventure – the only team it defeated during a 1-13-1 season last year. A win in that game would give Cornell its first 4-0 start since a season-opening streak of six straight wins to start the 2005 campaign.
