Men's Soccer Upsets #16 Michigan State in Overtime, 2-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – In a game that needed extra time to determine the victor, Cornell defeated No. 16-ranked Michigan State by a final score of 2-1 (OT), in East Lansing, Mich. on Sept. 8. Freshman Will Citron scored the game-winning goal for the Big Red, finding the back of the net in the 96th minute to defeat the Spartans.

It's Cornell's first win over a ranked opponent since 9/19/2017, a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 11-ranked Syracuse.

Cornell (1-1) out-shot the Spartans by a 19-6 margin overall, and led in shots on goal, 8-4. Michigan State (0-2-2) held an advantage in corner kicks attempted with 10, while the Big Red attempted six. Making his first start of the season, senior goalkeeper Ryan Shellow made three saves.

Chances on net came early for the Big Red as senior George Pedlow had two first half chances for Cornell. Pedlow's first opportunity came in the 14th minute when he forced the Michigan State keeper off his line, but the shot fired just right of goal. Pedlow pestered the MSU keeper once more in the 28th minute, putting his chance on target only to be saved.

Senior John Scearce nearly gave Cornell a lead just before halftime with a shot on goal in the final five seconds of the first half. Scearce's shot was deflected by a Michigan State defender and the MSU goalkeeper was able to put his hand on it and tip it over the crossbar to keep the score level heading into the break.

Junior Harry Fuller broke the ice following 51 minutes of scoreless play, giving Cornell a 1-0 lead over a tough Big Ten opponent. Fuller collected a pass from freshman Connor Drought and sent a strike on goal from outside the 18 that cracked off the crossbar and deflected in for Cornell's first goal of the season. Fuller was more of a distributor than a goal-scorer in 2018, leading the team in assists with four.

Michigan State brought the game back to even in the 61st minute when Alaa Algahim slotted a ball into the bottom left corner of the net, past Shellow.

Freshman Brandon Morales was close to sending Cornell home with a win in regulation as his shot in the final seconds of the second half bounced off the right post.

In the 96th minute, freshman Will Citron secured victory for the Big Red, scoring the first goal of his career in overtime to send Cornell home with a win. Citron secured a ball bouncing around the box and fired past the outstretched Spartan goalkeeper to find the bottom left corner of the net. Sophomore Emeka Eneli and Morales kept the play alive for Cornell to set up the opportunity.
