ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore
Sivasangari Subramaniam improved to 6-0 on the season from the No. 1 position, but the women's squash team was dealt three non-league losses over the weekend against Stanford, Virginia and Drexel.
Cornell (3-5), which is ranked ninth in the nation by the College Squash Association, opened the trip with an 8-1 loss to sixth-ranked Stanford (4-3) on Friday at MSquash Accelerator in Port Chester, N.Y. Subramaniam accounted for the Big Red's lone point, fighting back for a four-game victory against Elena Wagenmans. Seniors
Madison Miles and
Lucy Martin, and freshman
Alexis Shatzman all forced the maximum five games in their respective matches.
On Saturday at Penn Squash Center in Philadelphia, the Big Red and 10th-ranked Virginia (8-3) went down to the wire. Sophomore
Lily Zelov won in four at No. 2 and Shatzman came all the way back from two down to win in five at No. 6 to tie the score at 4. The Cavaliers would ultimately take the final match to secure the upset, though. Subramaniam and freshman
McKenna Stoltz (No. 7) accounted for Cornell's other points in the match.
The trip concluded Sunday at fifth-ranked Drexel (6-4). For a third time on the weekend, Subramaniam won in four from the No. 1 spot, giving Cornell its lone point of the opening rotation. Freshman
Ania LaDow cruised to a three-game victory at No. 9, and Martin held on for a five-game win at No. 8.
Cornell's travels continue next weekend with three matches in the Nutmeg State. The Big Red visits Trinity at 5 p.m. Friday, then shifts down to Yale's Brady Squash Center for neutral-site matches against George Washington at 2 p.m. Saturday and Franklin & Marshall at 11 a.m. Sunday.
