Newly Ranked #16 Men's Tennis Hosts Tulsa on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. – Following a weekend in which it claimed the 2020 ECAC Indoor Championship, the Cornell men's tennis team moved up to #16 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, as announced by the association on Tuesday. The Big Red also entered the Tennis Channel/USTA rankings on Wednesday, checking in at #25. Cornell's rank of #16 is the second highest team rank in program history.
 
At the ECAC Championships, Cornell (6-1) defeated now #14 Harvard and #25 Dartmouth with ease, handing each team its first loss of the season. The Big Red defeated Dartmouth, 4-1, in the semi-finals, before defeating Harvard by a 4-1 tally in the championship match. Cornell also owns wins over Binghamton, Michigan State, Colgate and Brown to open its 2020 slate.
 
Junior Eero Vasa joined the Oracle/ITA Top 125 National Singles rankings as well on Tuesday, now ranked as the #110 player in the country. Vasa owns a 5-1 singles record, highlighted by a win over then No. 59-ranked Ronan Jachuck of Harvard in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). Vasa's lone loss of the season came against now No. 17-ranked Andrew Fenty of Michigan.
 
Cornell will welcome Tulsa to Reis Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 23 for a 9 a.m. match. Tulsa owns a 5-3 record for the season, but have lost three-straight against strong competition. The Hurricanes have lost to now #2 Ohio State, #13 Texas A&M and #48 Alabama. Kody Pearson is 3-3 at No. 1 singles for Tulsa, including a win over #46 Olivier Stuart of Mercer. Pearson's win over Mercer has him ranked #56 in the Oracle/ITA Singles Top 125.
 
The Big Red has enjoyed a strong start to the dual meet season, dominating singles play to the tune of a 29-4 record. Vasa is tied for the team-high in wins with Daniel Soyfer, who owns a 5-0 record playing at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Close behind are Alafia Ayeni and Pietro Rimondini, who each own 4-1 records. Evan Bynoe and Lev Kazakov each have three singles wins on the season.
 
Cornell is still experimenting with its doubles pairings, playing eight different duos through seven matches. The combination of Bynoe and Rimondini has a 3-1 record at No. 3 doubles. Soyfer and Vasa have also played alongside one another on four occasions with a 2-2 overall record (2-0 at No. 1 doubles). Bynoe is 2-0 when playing alongside Konstantin Kirovski and the pairing of Ayeni/Kazakov is 2-1.
