NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The women's squash team's defense of the Kurtz Cup got off on the right foot on Friday, with the Big Red leading from start to finish in an 8-1 victory over George Washington in the quarterfinals at Yale's Brady Squash Center.

Seven of the eight victories for Cornell (6-10) came in the minimum three games, advancing the Big Red into the semifinals of the Kurtz Cup – which is the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship. The 11th-ranked Big Red will take on 10th-ranked Virginia at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of one of last year's semifinals. The Cavaliers advanced by rolling to a 9-0 win over 15th-ranked Middlebury on Friday .

While sophomore Sivasangari Subramaniam (No. 1) and freshman McKenna Stoltz (No. 7) cruised to quick victories in the opening rotation, freshman Alexis Shatzman (No. 6) had to battle to close out her match in five.

The second rotation saw the Big Red comfortable sweep in each contest. Sophomore Lily Zelov (No. 2) and junior Mimi deLisser (No. 5) clinched the match before GW (7-15) eventually got in the board in the final wave of matches.
