NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The women's squash team's attempted defense of the Kurtz Cup came to a close Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Virginia in the semifinals at Yale's Brady Squash Center.
Seniors
Lucy Martin and
Madison Miles, and sophomore
Sivasangari Subramaniam accounted for the Big Red points in convincing sweeps at No. 8 and No. 1, respectively. Cornell (6-11), which entered the weekend ranked 11th in the nation by the College Squash Association, will close out the weekend at the Hoehn Cup – which is the CSA's 'B' Division national championship – with a third-place match against 12th-ranked Brown at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Martin's quick sweep started off the opening rotation to give the Big Red a quick 1-0 lead. After 10th-ranked Virginia (16-6) tied it up with a win at No. 2, a marathon match at No. 5 ensued. Junior tri-captain
Mimi deLisser fought off a couple match balls in the fourth game before clawing out a 15-13 win to force a fifth, but the Cavaliers ultimately prevailed to take a 2-1 lead.
Virginia would win the next three matches to reach completion via sweep to clinch the match, but not without resistence from Cornell. Miles rallied to force a fifth game at No. 4, then overcame a big early deficit in the final game to win 11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9. A short time later, Subramaniam completed her sweep at No. 1 to improve to 14-1 on the season.
