CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The men's squash team fell to Columbia, 4-3, in the championship match of the Hoehn Cup on Sunday afternoon at Harvard's Murr Center. Freshman
Veer Chotrani and sophomore Nicholas Göth Errington both wrapped up perfect 3-0 weekends in their respective matches.
Though it came up just short of the program's fourth Hoehn Cup – the 'B' flight of the College Squash Association's national team championships – the Big Red's second-place finish in the event will likely lead to a year-end national ranking of 10th, which is two places higher than the team's standing entering the weekend. That bump is comes on the strength of Friday's tight vicotry over #13 Franklin & Marshall and Saturday's upset of #9 Dartmouth.
Cornell (7-11) came up just short of another upset Sunday against 10th-ranked Columbia. The Big Red took a 2-1 lead after the opening rotation, starting with senior
Jared Scherl's three-game sweep at No. 9. Göth Errington then capped his perfect weekend with a four-game victory at No. 5.
The Lions answered back with two sweeps in the middle rotation. Chotani's four-game victory at No. 1 kept the match tied entering the final rotation, though the clinching point came from the No. 3 position. No scores were reported in the final two matches.
While team competition is now complete, select members of the Big Red will compete in the CSA's Individual Championships next weekend at Penn Squash Center in Philadelphia.
