Softball Opens Weekend With Win Over Buffalo

FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman Mia Burd was nearly perfect in the circle and sophomore Allison Kerce got hot at the plate as the Cornell softball team defeated Buffalo by a final score of 4-1 on Friday, March 6. Kerce drove in two runners on Friday, including a key insurance run in the seventh inning via sacrifice fly.

Burd threw five and two-thirds hitless innings for the Big Red before Buffalo finally broke through with its first hit in the bottom of the sixth. The Big Red freshman struck out five batters, allowing just one hit, one walk and one unearned run. With a win on Friday, Burd improved her season record to 3-0, lowering her earned run average to 2.25 in the process. Freshman Celia Macari was the team's top hitter, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring twice. Kerce led the team with two RBI.

Cornell broke the 0-0 tie in the fourth inning when Kerce reached on an error by the third baseman to score sophomore Hanna Crist. The Big Red added to its lead in the fifth after Macari was brought around to score on a groundout by freshman Maicie Levitt.

Buffalo found its lone run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth after breaking up Burd's no-hit bid. Alexis Matheney singled to left and would later be brought around the bases following a Big Red error.

Cornell added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, using a bases loaded walk by Crist to increase its lead to 3-1. Kerce's sacrifice fly would later score senior Bridgette Rooney and give the Big Red a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Buffalo's Madelyn Hickingbottom pitched a complete game for the Bulls, allowing four runs (three earned), seven hits and two walks, while striking out five.

Up Next: Cornell will play two games at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, March 7, first taking on Hofstra at 2:30 p.m. before facing host George Mason at 4:45 p.m. to end the day. Hofstra owns a 2-12 record in 2020 following a loss to Canisius on Friday. George Mason brings a 3-11 record to day two of the invitational. Hofstra will face Buffalo prior to meeting the Big Red.
