IOWA CITY, Iowa – Cornell men's tennis continued its stretch through the Hawkeye State with a 4-0 victory over Louisville on Saturday, March 7. The Big Red took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, before securing wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match.
With Saturday's win, the Big Red improves 9-1 overall with a six-match winning streak.
Lev Kazakov and
Daniel Soyfer opened the match with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Tin Chen and Alex Wesbrooks. The Cardinals were quick to respond however, taking a victory on court one, where Matthew Fung and Fabien Salle defeated
Alafia Ayeni and
Vladislav Melnic, 6-3.
It all came down to the match at No. 3 doubles, where
Evan Bynoe and
Pietro Rimondini came through in the clutch, defeating David Mizrahi and Sergio Hernandez, 7-6.
Cornell continued to control the outcome in singles play, winning at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5. Ayeni extended the Big Red's lead to 2-0 following his spotless 6-0, 6-0 win over Hernandez.
Melnic added his second win in as many days at No. 4 singles, defeating Randy Wilson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Rimondini secured victory for Cornell with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mizrahi at No. 5 singles.
Eero Vasa, Kazakov and Soyfer all had matches end unfinished due to Cornell reaching four points.
