The Perfect Season: Big Red Locks The Gate At Percy Field, Locks Down Franklin & Marshall

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell closed out historic Percy Field in style, dominating the second half en route to a 26-3 victory over Franklin & Marshall. The win, the Big Red's fifth straight, improved its record to 6-2 for head coach Dr. Albert Sharpe with road games at Michigan and the annual Thanksgiving Day contest with Penn to come.

All-America quarterback Charley Barrett ran for two touchdowns, including a highlight-reel 60-yard score in the second quarter. He added two PATs and averaged 47.0 yards on six punts to put a cherry on his strong effort. He completed 2-of-4 passes for 47 yards and directed an offense that ran for 318 yards and all four scores.

Barrett's second touchdown was one for the ages. He circled left, evaded three F&M tacklers, straight-armed a fourth and dodged a fifth's shoestring tackle on the sidelines, tip-toeing nearly 20 yards before righting himself and going over to push Cornell's lead to 13-3. The Big Red were never seriously threatened in the second half.

While the Big Red extended its lead after the break, it was the defense that did the most work. Franklin & Marshall was limited to -2 rushing yards and 1-of-4 passing after the break, intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble. All-American John O'Hearn, despite struggling with an ankle injury, was consistently causing havoc in the backfield for Cornell.

Cornell opened the scoring with a methodical 21-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Barrett breaking the plane from a yard out. The goal kick failed, making it 6-0.

The visitors cut that lead in half with a 35-yard field goal by fullback Jones. He had the highlight play of the scoring drive thanks to a 60-yard spurt. F&M never crossed the 20 yard line again.

The score stayed that way into the fourth quarter. Charles Shuler, starting at left halfback, kept his legs churning after getting hit early and pushed his way in from 20 yards out. He had 28 yards on four carries on the drive. Right halfback Carl Philippi capped the scoring minutes later with his third carry of the drive finding paydirt from 13 yards out. He finished with 29 yards.

In all, 20 players saw action for Cornell while Franklin & Marshall made just one substitution in the game.

The Big Red will have a short week before heading to Ann Arbor on Thursday for Saturday's 2 p.m. contest at Ferry Field. The team will depart at 7:30 p.m. from the Armory to catch the 8:51 p.m. train from the lower Lehigh Valley Station. More than 3,000 students, faculty and staff are expected to lead the procession to the station.
