Men's Soccer Aims to Bounce Back Against Binghamton on Tuesday

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team looks to get back into the win column on Tuesday, Oct. 19 when it meets Binghamton at the Bearcat Sports Complex for a 7 p.m. game.

• Cornell was defeated by Yale, 2-0, marking the Big Red's first defeat since the season opener.
• The Big Red out-shot Yale by a 20-5 tally and outdid the Bulldogs 7-2 in shots on goal. Cornell had more opportunities on set pieces, earning seven corner kicks to just two for Yale.
• Yale goalkeeper Elian Haddock put on an impressive performance to stop the Big Red offense making six saves.
• Fifth-year midfielder Tyler Bagley and freshman midfielder Wilson Eisner each put two shots on goal.
• Yale scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute. A ball sent into the box by TJ Presthus bounced off the chest of Paolo Carroll and found the boot of Kahveh Zahiroleslam. Zahiroleslam fired a shot off the volley and found the back of the net.

• Cornell moved up five spots to #19 in the United Soccer Coaches rankings last week.
• The Big Red is ranked #13 in the first NCAA Men's Soccer RPI rankings released on Monday, Oct. 11.
• Cornell ranks #2 in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region behind New Hampshire.
• New rankings are set to be released on Tuesday afternoon prior to game time.
 

Big Red by the Numbers:

• Cornell has the No. 4 scoring offense in the country at 2.73 goals per game. The Big Red also rank seventh in points per game (7.73), third in shot accuracy (.525 percent) and 10th in shots per game (16.27).
• The Big Red tops the charts in shots on goal per game with 8.55. Cornell is 13th in total goals (30) despite having played one less game than most of the country.
• Senior Tyler Bagley has been among the best players in the country this season, ranking second in the country in total points (27). His 2.45 points per game ranks first in the country. Bagley's .91 goals per game and total goals (10) each rank sixth nationally.
 

About Binghamton:

• Binghamton Preview
• Binghamton is 7-5-1 this season and recently dropped a 2-1 match to Hartford on Saturday. The Bearcats have lost three straight, but have faced stiff competition including America East foe New Hampshire.
• Binghamton started the season 7-2 with wins over UMass Lowell, Stony Brook, Monmouth, Canisius, Siena, St. Bonaventure and Colgate.
• Opponents have out-scored Binghamton this season 21-16 with the Bearcats averaging 1.23 goals per game on 10.7 shots per contest.
• Ethan Homler is the point leader for the Bearcats with five goals and one assist to his name this season. His lead is closely chased by Noah Leuscher who has three goals and three assists.
• Goalkeeper Mats Roorda returned to the starting XI for Binghamton in its match against Hartford. Roorda has made 24 saves in goal this season along with a .649 save percentage and a 3-3 record. Roorda was in net for Binghamton's shutout over Siena on Sept 7, 2021.
 

The Series vs. Binghamton:

• Cornell leads the all-time series against Binghamton, 14-5-2, in a series that dates back to 1974. Cornell defeated Binghamton, 2-0, in the sides' last meeting on August 31, 2018. In similar fashion to the 2021 season, Tyler Bagley and Emeka Eneli did the scoring for Cornell that day.
 

Defensive Darlings:

• Jonah Kagen, Tate Keir, Henry Hylbert and Kisa Kiingi are the primary starters in Cornell's back line, with Mateo Rodriguez, Nick Allen, Connor Drought, and Cam Maquat also making starts. Kagen has made 10 starts in 11 matches for the Big Red.
• Kagen scored his first goal of the season against Colgate last Tuesday. It was just the second goal of his career, with the first happening on Nov. 3, 2018 in match against Dartmouth his freshman season.
• Goalkeeper Brady McSwain has started all 11 of Cornell's matches thus far making 37 saves. McSwain owns a .712 save percentage and a 1.31 goals against average.
• Despite a loss to Yale on Saturday, Cornell defense surrendered it's fewest shots on goal of the season with two.
 

Midfield Maestros:

• Tyler Bagley, Harry Fuller, Wilson Eisner and Lalo Serrano have been Cornell's consistent starting four in the midfield all season.
• Bagley is the team leader in goals (10), while Fuller has five to his name. 
• Kagen has the ability to shift up into the midfield as well, along with Alioune Ka, Brandon Morales and Kurt Lehmkuhl. Morales is tied for third on the team with three assists. Ka is tied for fourth on the team in total points (5) on two goals and one assist.
 

Fast Forwards:

• Emeka Eneli has started all 11 games up front for the Big Red and has been joined by Charles Touche, Matthew Goncalves and Brandon Morales in the starting lineup this season. Freshman Danny Lokko made his collegiate debut against Colgate.
• Eneli owns six goals and is second on the team in assists with four. Eneli's 16 points match the career-best he set as a freshman in 2018.
• Touche is tied for fourth on the team in points with one goal and three assists, while Goncalves has one goal to his name.
 

Up Next:

• Cornell returns to Berman Field on Saturday, Oct. 23 for an Ivy League match against Brown. It's the first of four Ivy League matches to close out the regular season for the Big Red in 2021. Brown will enter Saturday's match with a 3-7-1 record overall and a 1-1-1 mark in Ancient Eight play. The Bears played to a 2-2 draw against Harvard last Saturday.
