ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's polo team has a pair of games to look forward to this weekend, as the Big Red will square off against Garrison Forest on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center in Ithaca, N.Y. before taking on Harvard on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
Last Time Out:
The Big Red went 2-1 in its games last week, including a 1-1 showing at the Virginia Polo Fall Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia Polo Club, which was good for a second-place finish. In Charlottesville, Va., Cornell started out the tournament with a 22-2 rout of Colorado State, with Rachel Booth and Lea Jih-Vieira both scoring a season-high six goals in the win. Virginia came out on top in the Big Red's second game, however, by a score of 21-2. It was none other than Booth and Jih-Vieira that scored goals against the Cavaliers, finishing the tournament with seven goals apiece.
Cornell took care of business at home against the Central New York Polo Club on Friday, Oct. 22, recording a 16-7 victory. It was the trio of Annie Rogers, Ellie Finch, and Sophie Kofsky that helped propel Cornell to the win, combining for 14 of the Big Red's 16 points in the contest. Rogers and Finch each scored a game-high five points for the Big Red, with Rogers tallying a season-best five goals and Finch scoring four goals, one of which was good for two points, in her season debut. Kofsky added three goals of her own, including one two-point score, for four points on the contest.
vs. Garrison Forest:
Cornell has won each of its last five meetings with Garrison Forest, the most recent being an 18-8 victory during the 2017-18 season on Jan. 26, 2018. The Big Red will look to make it six-straight when it goes head-to-head with Garrison Forest on Friday.
vs. Harvard:
The Big Red has had great success against the Crimson over the years, holding a 17-0 record in the series dating back to 1990. Cornell has played Harvard in each of the last four seasons in which it competed, picking up two victories against the Crimson in 2016-17 and 2017-18 and one in 2018-19 and 2019-20. The Big Red's most recent win was a 13-1 victory on Nov. 10, 2019 in Cambridge, Mass.
A Balanced Attack:
Led by Lea Jih-Vieira's 13 goals for 14 points this season, the Big Red has four student-athletes that have scored at least 10 points on the year. Sophia Neis and Jasmine Umrigar have both scored 11 goals for 11 points, while Rachel Booth has 10 points on the season on nine goals.
