Palde, Ramsey Score Two as Field Hockey Downs Colgate, 4-3

HAMILTON, N.Y.— The Cornell field hockey team put the cap on its weekend sweep as the Big Red passed Colgate, 4-3, Sunday at rainy Tyler's Field.

The Big Red's points leader, Caroline Ramsey, scored two off penalty corners while Isabella Palde's timely goals made all the difference in Cornell's third win in as many games.

Ramsey's first goal came during the Big Red's first penalty corner of the day when the junior sent a laser of a shot to the top of the Colgate net at the thirteen minute mark of the first quarter. Kate MacGillis inserted the ball on and Bridget Mahoney held it in place in the slippery conditions for assists on Ramsey's eighth goal of the season.

Colgate tied things up just two minutes later when Julia Jamesley found the back of the Big Red's cage, but Ramsey and the Big Red responded just under four minutes into the second frame when she once again connected on a penalty corner goal with assists coming from MacGillis and Mahoney.

Later in the second, Avery Smith recorded her first point of the season when she spotted Isabella Palde open at the left corner of the Raiders' net. Smith fired the pass to Padle who was able to deflect the shot into the goal for her fourth of the year and the two-point advantage headed into halftime.

The third quarter did not fall in Cornell's favor though, and Colgate scored two unanswered after the break.

Colgate scored on its first penalty corner of the game when Taylor Casamassa sent a shot to  Aerin Park. Park got a pad on it, but the shot deflected in to give Colgate only its second multi-goal game of the season.

Shortly after its first, the Raiders tied things after another penalty corner goal. This time coming as Rachel Alderfer passed the ball in to Casammassa, who then immediately dished the pass back to Alderfer in perfect position to score the equalizer.

"I thought we played really well in the first half," said head coach Andy Smith. "We allowed two silly goals in the second and missed a penalty stroke and turned it into a game when it really shouldn't have been one."

With the clock running out and overtime looming, the Big Red's shining moment came late in the third quarter with what Smith called "a moment of individual brilliance."

Olivia Friedberg beat out a Colgate defender to send a long pass downfield to Palde. Palde controlled the ball, spun to the left around Raiders goalkeeper Anna Unger and fired a backhand shot past a Colgate defender on the goal line to seal the deal for Cornell.

The Big Red held a 24-8 shooting advantage and Aerin Park recorded five saves. Unger recorded 14 saves for the Raiders.

The Big Red return to Ivy League play Saturday when it takes on Penn before another non-conference matchup— this one with Bucknell Sunday.
