HANOVER, N.H. - The Cornell men's soccer program got back to its winning ways on Saturday following a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth in double overtime. Fifth-year forward Charles Touche broke a 0-0 tie early in the second half, while fifth-year midfielder Tyler Bagley scored the game-winning goal in the 101st minute.
"This one was always going to be a difficult game," head coach John Smith said. "Dartmouth are miles better than their record suggests - they've had an incredibly difficult schedule. To dig this one out is a testament to the fighting spirit of this group of guys. The fact that our three fifth-years, guys who joined a struggling program in the fall of 2017, powered us to victory makes it that much sweeter."
Cornell (11-3-1, 4-2 Ivy) out-shot the Big Green 16-11 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal. Bagley and senior forward Emeka Eneli each took four shots to lead the Big Red offensive attack. Junior goalkeeper Brady McSwain made a pair of saves in goal, while Dartmouth's Alex Budnik made five saves.
A relatively quiet first half was highlighted by a pair of strong chances on goal by the Big Red. Eneli chipped a shot over the Big Green goalkeeper, but it fell wide of goal. Sophomore forward Matthew Goncalves put a strong shot on net, but his shot was kick saved away by Budnik.
Dartmouth nearly scored the first goal of the match in the 60th minute after a series of shots took McSwain off his line. Junior defender Connor Drought made a game-saving team save to prevent the Big Green goal.
Cornell took its first lead of the game shortly thereafter when fifth-year midfielder Harry Fuller connected with Touche in the 63rd minute. Fuller found enough space to send a perfect ball into the box where it met the head of Touche for his second goal of the season.
Disaster struck for the Big Red in the 80th minute when a low bouncing shot from Dartmouth's David Alino tied the game up at 1-1. Eneli put a strong shot on goal in the final minute of regulation, but the teams would ultimately need more time to decide a victor.
Entering the game with a 1-1-1 record in overtime games this season, all four of Cornell's overtime games have needed the second OT period.
Cornell's contingent of fifth-years got it done just 50 seconds into the second overtime period. Passes from Fuller and Eneli set up Bagley for the game winning goal in the 101st minute. It's Bagley's 13 goal of the year, giving him 33 points on the season. Bagley's goal moves him into sole possession of Cornell's fifth-best offensive season in program history. Eneli's assist was his seventh, marking the fourth consecutive game he's recorded a point.
Up Next: Cornell will conclude the regular season and honor its seniors at home against Columbia at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 13.
