#6 Columbia Ekes Past #8 Women's Squash, 5-4, In Ivy Opener

NEW YORK – Senior Sivasangari Subramaniam and junior Alexis Shatzman won marathon five-game affairs on Sunday, though Columbia had already clinched a women's squash victory over Cornell in a matchup of teams currently jockeying for Howe Cup positioning. The Lions hung on for a 5-4 win at S.L. Green StreetSquash.
 
Selena Georgieva (No. 4) and Ania LaDow (No. 9) swept their respective matches for in the opening rotation for Cornell (2-2, 0-1 Ivy League), which entered the weekend ranked eighth by the College Squash Association. Sixth-ranked Columbia (2-1, 1-0) responded with a sweep of the next three matches, then clinched with a four-game victory at No. 5.
 
Shatzman never trailed in staving off Bunny Fox at No. 7 to win in five, then Subramaniam was pushed all the way to the wire by Chan Sin Yuk at No. 1 before wrapping up the win in a match that exceeded an hour. Subramaniam – who finished second at the CSA National Individual Championships as a sophomore – improved to 4-0 on the season in a matchup of players both ranked inside the top 100 in the world by the Professional Squash Association.
 
The Big Red will remain idle for six weeks through intersession before returning to play with its first home matches of the season Jan. 15-16 against Yale and Trinity, respectively.
