ITHACA, N.Y. – Kyle Dake '13 was defeated in the quarterfinals of the 74-kilogram men's freestyle wrestling competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday night, falling to Mahamedkhabib Kadzimahamedau of Belarus.
Dake's Olympic debut came in the Round of 16, where he matched up against Mostafa Hosseinkhani of Iran. Dake earned a pair of step-outs in the first period and scored a takedown in the second to defeat Hosseinkhani, 4-0.
Facing Kadzimahamedau in the quarterfinals, Dake fell by technical superiority, 11-0. A four-point throw, a takedown, and a pair of step-outs in the first period put Dake at a 9-0 disadvantage heading into the second period. Kadzimahamedau scored a takedown 27 seconds into the period to close the bout.
Following his defeat of Dake, Kadzimahamedau bested Italy's Frank Chamizo in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal match. With Kadzimahamedau's advancement into the finals, Dake was pulled back into bronze medal contention via repechage. Dake will wrestle Cuba's Jeandry Garzon in repechage at 10:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, August 5, with the winner advancing to the bronze medal match against Chamizo on Friday morning.
