Field Hockey Downs Colgate, 3-1

ITHACA, N.Y.— Three members of the Cornell field hockey team found their names in the score column during the Big Red's 3-1 win over Colgate Sunday at Marsha Dodson Field.

Caroline Ramsey recorded her second goal of the season, while Julia Darmo and Antonia Packard recorded their first to help the Big Red open its season 2-0 at home.

"It's a great way to start." said head coach Andy Smith. "I thought we made big improvements from Friday and I'm happy with the way we executed on a lot of things. It's upwards and onwards from here."

Throughout the game, the Big Red did its best to take advantage of Colgate's mistakes, scoring all three goals in penalty situations.

Ramsey's goal (her second of the season and second off a penalty corner) came just under five minutes into the game off a feed and stop by Natalie Stone and Bridget Mahoney. The trio has now recorded two penalty corner goals in the first two games of the season for Cornell.

Julia Darmo found the back of the net for the first time this season off a penalty stroke when the veteran junior looked right before sweeping a shot to the back left corner of the Raider net to give the Big Red a convincing 2-0 advantage at the half.

The Big Red's third and final goal came at the 6-minute mark of the third quarter when Antonia Packard deflected a shot attempt by Caroline Ramsey during a penalty corner.

"Originally Caroline was going to send it to the other side, but in the midst of all the chaos she found me open on the post and I tipped it in," said Packard, whose goal comes as the first of the sophomore's intercollegiate career.

With just five minutes left to play, Colgate's Carter Leahy found a pass from Ella Corbett to connect for the 0-2 Raider's only goal of the game and only its third of the season in as many games.

The Big Red held the Raiders to just five shots on the day, compared to its 13. In total, Cornell recorded eight shots on goal and ten penalty corners while Colgate had just two of each.

"When you haven't played in 18 months, you're going to be playing a lot of catchup," said coach Smith. "This weekend we played catchup really well and hopefully next weekend we play catchup even better."

The Big Red return to Marsha Dodson Field Friday when it faces UAlbany at 4 p.m. before hosting defending national runner-up Michigan Sunday at noon.
