Men's Soccer Opens Ivy League Play at Penn

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer program looks to start Ivy League play strong when it meets Penn at Rhodes Field for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 2.

• Cornell improved to 5-1-1 last Saturday with a 5-1 win over Marist. The Red Foxes scored first in the 3rd minute of action, but it was Cornell that scored five unanswered goals to come away on top.
• Tyler Bagley and Emeka Eneli each scored two goals in the effort, with Eneli adding an assist. Bagley scored the equalizing goal in the 22nd minute after Eneli's initial shot was saved.
• Charles Touche score his first goal of the season late in the contest, scoring on a breakaway goal in the 88th minute.
• Goalkeeper Brady McSwain contributed a solid performance, making six saves on seven shots faced.
• Marist's goal came from Stefan Copetti on a rebound following a shot from Henrique Cruz early in the action.
 

Emeka Eneli Wins Ivy League Player of the Week:

• After a two goal, one assist performance against Marist on Saturday night, senior forward Emeka Eneli has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week. 
• It's the first player of the week award for Eneli since Oct. 1, 2018, when he shared the honor with Columbia's Danny Laranetto.
 

Big Red in the Rankings:

• Cornell ranks No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region behind New Hampshire. The Big Red received 36 points in the also receiving votes section of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for Sept. 28, the only Ivy League program doing so.
• The Big Red rank ahead of Penn, Princeton and Yale in the regional rankings.
 

Big Red by the Numbers:

• Cornell ranks 6th nationally in scoring offense (2.86 goals per game) and 2nd nationally in shots on goal per game (8.29).
• The Big Red ranks 9th in points per game (7.86) and 8th in total goals scored (20).
• Senior Tyler Bagley ranks 4th nationally in goals per game (1.14) and 3rd in points per game (2.57). His eight goals rank 3rd in the country.
 

About The Big Red:

•  Cornell finished the 2019 season with a record of 10-5-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the Ivy League. The Big Red placed third in the Ivy League, its best finish since 2012 when Cornell won the conference championship.
•  Cornell returns 17 players from the 2019 season while adding 19 newcomers into the program. The Big Red returns 9,282 minutes played of a possible 16,525.
•  Junior Connor Drought (second team), senior Emeka Eneli (honorable mention), and fifth year Harry Fuller (honorable mention) return as All-Ivy League selections in 2019. Fifth year Charles Touche (first team) and senior Tate Keir (second team) were All-Ivy League selections in 2018.
•  Cornell was chosen to finish second in the Ivy League for the 2021 season in the preseason media poll. The Big Red garnered 97 points with one first place vote to finish behind Yale.
•  Seniors Emeka Eneli and Jonah Kagen were named co-captains for the 2021 season.
 

Defensive Darlings:

• Cornell has shuffled its back line around a bit this season with Henry Hylbert, Jonah Kagen, Mateo Rodriguez, Kisa Kiingi, Nick Allen, Connor Drought, Tate Keir, and Cam Maquat all making starts. Hylbert and Kagen have each made six starts in seven games.
• Keir returned to the lineup against Fairleigh Dickinson and has started against Syracuse and Marist before swapping with Rodriguez in the second half of action.
• Goalkeeper Brady McSwain has started all seven of Cornell's matches thus far making 27 saves. McSwain owns a .730 save percentage and a 1.34 goals against average.
 

Midfield Maestros:

• Tyler Bagley, Harry Fuller, Wilson Eisner and Lalo Serrano have been Cornell's consistent starting four in the midfield all season.
• Bagley is the team leader in goals (8), while Fuller has four to his name. 
• Kagen has the ability to shift up into the midfield as well, along with Alioune Ka and Brandon Morales. Morales is tied for the team lead in assists with three.
 

Fast Forwards:

• Emeka Eneli has started all seven games up front for the Big Red and has been joined by Matthew Goncalves, Charles Touche and Brandon Morales in the starting lineup this season.
• Eneli owns four goals and is tied for the team-high in assists with three.
• Griffin Garrard. Alioune Ka and Goncalves have also seen time at the forward position, with Ka and Goncalves each owning one goal.
 

About Penn:

• Penn is 4-2-1 this season with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Colgate, Mount St. Mary's and Monmouth. The Quakers are currently No. 102 in the current NCAA RPI.
• Penn has been strong at Rhodes Field this season with a 3-1-1 record at home.
• Ben Stitz leads the team in scoring with two goals and six assists to his name. Matt Leigh and Joey Bhangdia lead the team in goals scored with three each.
• Sitz ranks 3rd nationally in assists and assists per game (.86).
• Dane Jacomen and Nick Christoffersen have split duties in goal, with Jacomen starting the last game against Monmouth. Jacomen is 3-1 in goal, making 16 saves and allowing 1.25 goals against on average.
• Penn ranks 27th nationally in points per game (6.43) and scoring offense (2.14).
 

The Series vs. Penn:

• Cornell is 31-64-14 against Penn all-time in a series that dates back to 1908. Penn defeated Cornell, 3-2, in the last meeting on Oct. 5, 2019. Cornell last defeated Penn, 1-0, on Sept. 29, 2018.
