Pivotal Matches Await #8 Women's Squash This Weekend

1/27/2022 9:30:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's squash team hosts Princeton at 2 p.m. Friday before hitting the road to wrap up Ivy League play with a huge match against Penn at noon Sunday.

The Big Red is coming off a split of Ivy League matches last weekend. Selena Georgieva rallied from two games down to win in five in the #3 match at Dartmouth, spurring Cornell to a 6-3 victory. While the Big Red was then on the wrong end of top-ranked Harvard's 91st consecutive victory, Georgieva and Sivasangari Subramaniam provided Cornell with two points against the defending national champion for just the second time in the programs' histories.

Subramaniam's victory was particularly noteworthy, because it moved her to 8-0 on the season and came against Hana Moataz, another one of the nation's top contenders for the College Squash Association National Individual Championships in March. It was the first dual-match loss for Moataz in her collegiate career.

Cornell (3-5, 1-3 Ivy League) continues to hold the #8 position in the College Squash Association's national rankings, which is highly coveted for the reason that it aligns for the final berth in the Howe Cup, the top division of the CSA's National Championships. Princeton (6-2, 2-1) is currently entrenched in the #3 spot after a victory over #4 Yale last weekend and narrow losses to #1 Harvard and #2 Trinity in recent weeks. Penn (7-5, 1-2), on the other hand, is currently ranked ninth and could leapfrog Cornell in the rankings with a victory on Sunday. Cornell has never defeated Princeton in 28 all-time meetings, and it is 2-29 against Penn – though it came as close to the Quakers as a 5-4 defeat in 2019.

Both matches will be available through subscription-based Ivy League Network, which is powered by Stretch Internet. Live scoring will also be available through the CSA's website, csasquash.com.
