Late Field Goal Gives Cornell 34-31 Win At Colgate For Program's 650th Victory

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Jackson Kennedy's 45-yard field goal with under two minutes was the last momentum swing in a game full of them and lifted Cornell to a 34-31 win at Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium. The win improved the Big Red to 2-1, guaranteed it a winning non-conference slate for the first time since 2016 and served as the program's 650th all-time.

Kennedy's perfect kicking day was the difference, but it was a win that showed the team's grit.It answered the bell numerous times - after surrendering the first score, after coughing up an 11-point first half lead and even after entering the fourth quarter trailing by a touchdown.

Cornell's offense was balanced in piling up 474 yards of offense (190 rushing, 284 passing), the defense got off the field on third downs (Colgate was 2-for-11) and special teams delivered when asked.

Jameson Wang completed 18-of-27 yards for a career-high 284 yards and a touchdown and ran for 98 more and two scores, including the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. His favorite target was 2021 first-team All-Ivy receiver Thomas Glover, who hauled in seven passes for 160 yards, totaled 182 all-purpose yards and scored twice.

Defensively, Trey Harris posted a career-best nine tackles and Demetrius Harris had eight to pace the Big Red. Jake Stebbins posted six tackles and a quarterback hurry in the fourth quarter that forced a punt, leading to the Big Red's tying score.

Colgate quarterback Michael Brescia ran for 83 yards and a touchdown and completed 19-of-40 passes for 195 yards. Jaedon Henry added 80 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Tyler Flick posted nine tackles with three for a loss while Mikey Jarmolowich made eight tackles, intercepted a pass and ran a fumble back 48 yards for a score.

First Quarter

• Neither team was able to generate much on their first possessions, but two plays for losses by the Big Red offense and a short punt let the Raiders take over possession on the scoring side of midfield.
• Pressured in the backfield, Brescia escaped around the left end and went 28 yards to the end zone to make it 7-0 less than five minutes in. • A 36-yard pass from Wang to Glover down to the 15 put Cornell in the red zone.
• Back-to-back penalties waved off a Cornell touchdown and gave the yards back on a Colgate foul, with Wang breaking through from the 3 to knot the score to finish an eight-play, 75-yard scoring drive.
• Cornell defense got a stop after big licks from Stebbins and Demetrius Harris.
• Glover's second catch of the day went for a first down shortly before the quarter ended.

Second Quarter

• Two plays into the second quarter, Cornell took its first lead when Wang went over the top to Glover who made a 62-yard house call to end the 85-yard drive. • Neither team got much going in the middle of the period.
• Holt Fletcher's second interception in three weeks stopped a Colgate drive.
• The Big Red gave it right back when Jarmolowich picked off a Wang pass, his first turnover of the season.
• Colgate cashed in on the turnover, getting a 42-yard field goal from Biscoe to cut Cornell's lead to 14-10.
• Two Raiders' penalties set up the third Cornell scoring drive, with Glover going the final 14 yards on a jet sweep to make it 21-10 with 1:26 left.
• The Raiders weren't done, needing the final 86 seconds to run 10 plays that ended with a 31-yard field goal by Biscoe at the halftime gun to go into the break up 21-13.

Third Quarter

• The Big Red took a pair of penalties to start the second half, but still picked up a first-and-25 on consecutive Wang runs.
• On a third-and-7, Cornell coughed up the football and Jarmolowich picked up the ball and ran 48 yards for the score to make it 21-19.
• Colgate ran a quick two-point conversion play, scoring to even the game when Michael Slivka hit Zack Pelland for the tie.
• Cornell punted it back after a three-and-out, and Colgate took its first lead since 7-0 when a six-play, 23-yard drive ended with a 31-yard field goal by Biscoe to go up 24-21.
• That began the see-saw ending, as Cornell responded with three points of its own with Kennedy hitting from 43 yards out to even the score at 24-24 with 4:13 left in the third.
• Five plays later, Colgate led 31-24 with Jaedon Henry finding the end zone on a 46-yard run.

Fourth Quarter

• Trailing 31-24 entering the final 15 minutes, Cornell wasted no time tying it up.
• Wang converted a third-and-8 with a 26-yard pass to Parker Woodring to keep the drive alive.
• The sophomore quarterback went around the end for 9 yards to even the score after Jackson Kennedy's PAT. • The teams traded punts in the middle of the fourth, with a big Jake Stebbins hurry forcing a third-and-12 that Colgate couldn't convert.
• Cornell took over with 6:52 remaining and the score tied, and immediately lost 10 yards on an end-around.
• Facing third-and-20 and looking at a punt, Wang hit Eddy Tillman in the flat and the sophomore evaded a tackle and tip-toed the end line to the marker to pick up a new set of downs.
• Two more first downs eventually brought the ball to the 28, and Kennedy drilled the ensuing 45-yard field goal for a career-long with 1:55 left. • Colgate had time for 11 plays and picked up three first downs, including converting on third-and-10 form near midfield.
• A 51-yard game-tying field goal attempt by Biscoe fell short with 34 seconds left and Cornell was able to go into victory formation for its second win of the year.
