Gallman Scores as Women's Soccer Plays to Draw with Penn

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell's Laken Gallman scored early in the second half to equalize Penn's early first-half goal, as the Big Red and Quakers played to a 1-1 draw at Berman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Gallman's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Aidan Julia Reineman had a team-high three shots on goal for Cornell on Saturday. Erica Fox made one save in goal for the Big Red (1-5-4, 0-1-1 Ivy League).

Isobel Glass scored in the eighth minute for Penn as goalkeeper Laurence Gladu made a season-high seven saves for the Quakers (2-1-7, 0-0-2 Ivy). The draw was Penn's sixth match ending with a 1-1 score in 2022.

"It's nice to get a result in the Ivy League, but we're as disappointed with the tie as we've been with the one-goal defeats," Cornell head coach Rob Ferguson said. "We executed on both sides of the ball for the most part for 90 minutes. We started the game very well, then conceded. There was a spot in the middle where we felt we didn't connect. We didn't get a rhythm or tempo. We got back into it in the last 10-15 minutes of the half.

"The second half, for 45 minutes, we felt like we crushed it. Completely dominant with the quality on the board, the mindset, the aggressiveness, and being on the front foot."

Cornell applied pressure to Penn's defense in the first five minutes, leading to three of its seven corner kicks in the contest.

Penn also had ample chances in its attacking third, accumulating eight corner kicks, but could not capitalize off any.

Sizzy Lawton responded to Cornell having possession in its attacking third for most of the first five minutes by playing a cross inside the 8-yard box from the left flank. Lawton's cross deflected off Glass' right thigh and out of the reach of Fox, putting the Quakers ahead, 1-0, in the eighth minute.

Following a Cornell corner kick in the 48th minute, Gallman took advantage of a loose ball, sending a right-footed strike into the top-left corner of the goal to draw the game level.

Of Gallman's 19 shot attempts this season, 14 have been on target, good for a .737 shooting accuracy.

"The biggest thing about Laken is her understanding of the game," Ferguson said of his junior forward transfer. "She reads the game so well, knows what the right positions are and what the right passes are. She always looks dangerous and finds herself in good spaces, whether for her or to provide for someone else."

Cornell made a formation change in the second half, which allowed the Big Red to control play for most of the second half. Over the final 45 minutes, Cornell outshot Penn, 7-1, with five of the Big Red's seven shots on goal. The Quakers' lone shot attempt was off target.

"The adjustment was deliberate to control the game, and it worked," Ferguson said. "It was to control the game more in possession, but the way it worked out, it allowed us to control the game in both phases."

Game Notes

• Saturday was the 31st all-time meeting between Cornell and Penn. The Quakers still control the series lead, 20-7-4, following the draw. • Cornell registered its first draw in Ivy League play since a scoreless tie against Harvard on Oct. 8, 2016.

• The Big Red is now unbeaten over its last three home matches (1-0-2), posting consecutive draws to St. John's (Sept. 17) and Penn.

• Four of Cornell's last six matches have resulted in draws, matching the single-season program record for ties. The 2015 squad also registered four draws while going 9-4-4.
