Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Five Cornell men's tennis players solidified their spots for the ITA Northeast Super Regional after this weekend's action at the ITA Northeast Regional, hosted by Penn.
Junior
Bradley Paliska, sophomores
Jack McCarthy and
Adit Sinha, and freshmen
Aman Sharma and
Petar Teodorovic all clinched spots for the ITA Super Regionals, set to be hosted by Harvard University on Oct. 21-24 in Cambridge, Mass.
Sharma is the lone Cornell player to earn a spot in both singles and doubles brackets. Teodorovic is the only Cornell player to qualify in the singles draw. Paliska, McCarthy, and Sinha all qualified in the doubles draw.
Teodorovic had a successful weekend in the singles draw, dropping just eight games during his trio of straight-set victories. The native of Belgrade, Serbia, started the tournament off strong winning three straight sets by 6-0 scores. He beat St. Bonaventure's Norka Sanchez, 6-0, 6-0, but opening his second-round match against NJIT's Josh Smith with the same 6-0 score. Smith was able to win four games off Teodorovic, but the Cornell freshman proved to be too much, posting a 6-4 victory to head to the Round of 32. With the spot at Super Regionals on the line, Teodorovic dropped just four of the 16 games played against Princeton's Ellis Short, 6-2, 6-2.
The only other Cornell player to qualify in the singles draw was Sharma, who had to play a pair of three-set matches. After dropping the first set, 6-3, to NJIT's Amine el Kholti, Sharma settled into a groove by claiming the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Sharma won the first set of his second-round match against Drexel's Alan Jesudason, 6-4, before a third set was forced by Jesudason after a 6-3 triumph. In the tiebreaking set, Sharma lost just one game, 6-1, to clinch his spot in the Round of 32, where Sharma won, 6-4, 6-4, over Buffalo's Simon Wibler.
Sinha was close to becoming the third Cornell player to reach the Super Regionals, but after losing the first set to Monmouth's Niels van Noord, 6-2, Sinha retired when down 2-1 in the second set.
In other singles action during the weekend,
Samuel Paquette coasted in his first-round match on Friday over Fairleigh Dickinson's Arjun Sriram, 6-2, 6-1, but fell to Diogo Marques of St. John's, 6-4, 6-0, on Saturday.
Paliska could not become the second Big Red player to defeat someone from Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, as Paliska fell to Justas Trainaukas in three sets, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
After receiving a bye on Friday, McCarthy coasted in his first singles match of the tournament on Saturday, defeating Drexel's Hugo Brungs, 6-2, 6-3. On Sunday, however, Yale's Aidan Reilly defeated the Cornell sophomore, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, Paliska and McCarthy teamed up in the doubles bracket, dropping just nine of the 33 games played over their three matches to clinch a spot at Super Regionals.
Sinha and Sharma had to win two tiebreaks, one in the first round and the other in their quarterfinal match, to solidify their spot at Super Regionals.
After advancing to the second round via walkover and posting an 8-5 win in their first match on Sunday, Teodorovic and Paquette could not win their second match on Sunday, as Yale's Theo Dean and Michael Sun claimed the victory in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (2).
