ITHACA, N.Y. -- Penn's 89th-minute goal pushed the Quakers past the 16th-ranked Cornell men's soccer team in a spirited 3-2 final on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. Penn improved to 9-1-1 (3-0-0 Ivy) and the Big Red slipped to 9-3-0 (2-1-0 Ivy) in an early battle of conference contenders.
In a back-and-forth contest, Penn struck last with Leo Burney finishing a Ben Stitz volley with 1:48 remaining a little more than 30 minutes after
Emeka Eneli scored the equalizer, his third goal of the season, in the 58th minute.
Brennan Mallett assisted on the tally.
That score came early in the second half after the visitors went into the break with a 2-1 lead. Cornell struck first when
Connor Drought tallied in the 14th minute, but the Quakers' Aaron Messer netted his first of the season five minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. Stas Korzeniowski put Penn ahead for the first time when he finished one off in the 36th minute and the Quakers never again trailed.
Cornell held a narrow edge in shots (13-11) and corner kicks (7-5), though the Quakers put eight on goal to the Big Red's four.
Ryan Friedberg made four saves and the defense was credited for a fifth late in the contest when Friedberg was caught off his line.
