PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Gutsy play calls, a dominant first quarter and a defense that came up huge in the game's biggest moments pushed Cornell to 4-2 after its 24-21 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium. The Big Red clinched its first winning road record since 1999 and tied its longest win streak away from home since 1990 with the triumph.
Brown drove the length of the field in the closing minutes and appeared to have scored the go-ahead touchdown with 42 seconds remaining. A video review showed the runner was out at the 1, and after a short loss on first down and a Brown false start penalty pushed the ball back to the 9, fifth-year senior
Max Lundeen made the play of the game.
Lundeen came unblocked from the left side and hit the quarterback, separating Jake Wilcox from the football and
Brendan Chestnut fell on it to clinch the win with 28 ticks remaining. The senior had five tackles with two for a loss along with the game-changing sack.
Paul Lewis III and
Noah Taylor each had 10 tackles and
Jake Stebbins added nine, with Lewis adding a pass breakup. The defense was on the field for 87 plays, but surrendered just 4.4 yards per play.
Sophomore
Eddy Tillman ran for 130 of the team's 195 yards on the ground in a career-best performance, while
Jameson Wang accounted for all three Cornell touchdowns - one rushing and two passing. His 10-of-23 day through the air for 136 yards included two scoring strikes to
Matt Robbert. One went for 55 yards and proved to be the game winner with 11:44 remaining. The junior tight end hauled in three passes for 89 yards.
Jackson Kennedy hit his only field goal attempt, a 38-yarder in the first half that also was the difference in the final score, adding four touchbacks on five kickoff attempts.Â
Brown had 25 first downs to 17 for the Big Red and forced Cornell into a 3-of-14 effort on third down, but the visitors stopped a pair of key fourth-down conversion attempts. Jake Wilcox completed 27-of-44 passes for 260 yards and a score and Allen Smith found the end zone twice on the ground, but was otherwise limited to 40 yards on 20 carries. Solomon Miller caught two passes for 64 yards and a touchdown as 11 different Bears hauled in a reception. Defensively, Isaiah Reed notched seven stops with two for a loss and a pass breakup.

FIRST QUARTER
• The offensive line, which didn't allow a sack all day, and Tillman's hard running dominated the first drive for the Big Red, as the sophomore gained 62 yards on the ground on just four carries.
• Overall, the Big Red gained 71 of its 75 yards in the running game to take the lead.Â
• Wang went over from the 3-yard line for his seventh rushing score of the year to put Cornell up at the 10:17 mark of the first half to conclude the 10-play, 75-yard drive.
• The Big Red defense appeared to get a three-and-out, but a running into the kicker penalty allowed the Bears to continue the drive after picking up a fourth-and-1.
• The drive ended at the Big Red 38 when
Mason Yacovelli broke up a fourth-down pass attempt to give the Big Red the ball back.
• The teams punted back and forth to each other the rest of the half, with the lone highlight a 33-yard run by Tillman to push him over 100 yards (103 on seven carries) in the quarter.
• At the end of 15 minutes, Cornell had outgained the Bears 132-37, with the defense holding Brown to nine passing yards (1-of-7 passing).
Â
SECOND QUARTER
• A Brown three-and-out to start the second quarter and a shanked punt set the Big Red up at the Brown 30 and Cornell added to its lead.
•
Jameson Wang got
Thomas Glover his first touch with a 12-yard pass, but the offense otherwise bogged down.
•
Jackson Kennedy put the Big Red up 10 with a 38-yard field goal straight down the middle.
• The Bears got on the board to conclude a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended when Smith ran in from the 3 on a direct snap to get within 10-7 with 5:47 left before halftime.
• The teams traded punts again, with Cornell taking over with 1:31 to play.
• A Brown pass interference call and consecutive passes from Wang to Robbert, the second an 11-yard throw for a score with 45 seconds left, pushed the edge back to 10.
• With some time remaining, Brown took advantage of a roughing the passer call and a 13-yard pass from Wilcox to Hayes Sutton to have a chance to take a long field goal attempt.
• Christopher Maron attempted a 53-yarder that would have matched the school record, but
Maxwell Van Fleet blocked the low kick to send the visitors into halftime with a 17-7 edge.
Â
THIRD QUARTER
• Brown took the second half kickoff and immediately marched to the 11, but was stuck on a fourth-and-3 from the Cornell 4 when
Brendan Chestnut made the stop to turn the ball over on downs.
• It became a field position game for several possessions as three consecutive possessions ended in punts.
• Brown finally broke through, getting back to within 17-14 with 4:58 to play in the third.
• Smith stretched out over the final yard on fourth-and-goal from the 1 and Maron converted the PAT kick.
• The teams again traded punts as the third quarter came to an end.
Â
FOURTH QUARTER
• Cornell took over with 12:24 left in the fourth holding onto its three-point lead.
• Tillman's was injured on a 7-yard run, leading to a long delay, but the Big Red was fired up once it returned to play.
• On the very first play, Wang went up top to a streaking Robbert who carried it 55 yards to the end zone with 11:44 to play.
• The PAT kick by Kennedy made it 24-14.
• Brown answered right back, dinking and dunking its way down the field until Wilcox hit Miller for a 25-yard touchdown to get back within three points.
• Cornell looked to go three-and-out on the ensuing possession, but punter
Ayden McCarter faked and went around end for 6 yards on fourth-and-5 from the Big Red's own 30.Â
• Another fourth-down pickup, this time a 1-yard run by Wang, allowed Cornell to ultimately suck 5:53 off the clock before brown took over at its own 22 with 2:11 left needing a field goal to tie and a touchdown to take its first lead.
• The Bears ran 11 plays, none more consequential than a 10-yard run by Jordan DeLucia that appeared to be a touchdown.
• With a great pursuit by
Paul Lewis III, DeLucia ultimately steeped out of bounds at the 1, allowing the Bears to earn a first-and-goal at the 1 with under a minute remaining.
• Lewis was again in on the first down play, a three-yard Brown loss, then the Bears were called for a false start to push them back even further.
• On second-and-goal from the 9, Wilcox dropped back, but never saw Lundeen, who beat the tackle on the outside and wrapped up the Brown quarterback who put the ball on the turf.
• Chestnut, who got the earlier fourth-down stop, fell on the ball with 28 seconds left.
• The Big Red took a kneeldown in victory formation to run out the clock and secure its third consecutive road win.
