Beyond The Box Score: The Dartmouth Game

11/14/2022 9:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Here are some notes from Cornell's 17-13 win over Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Schoellkopf Field.

Team Notes

  • Cornell's fifth win of the year guaranteed the Big Red a .500 season, just the fifth since 2000.
  • The Big Red held the ball for 37:52, the third time with more than 37:00 of possession in a game this season. It is the first time Cornell has met that mark three times in a season (twice in 1989, 2005, 2019).
  • The team's 117 kickoff return yards are the most in a game since returning four kicks for 142 yards at Princeton on Oct. 28. 2017.
  • The Big Red's average of 33:44 of possession per game is just ahead of the school record of 33:27 set in 2005 - the last time Cornell posted a winning season on the gridiron.
  • The game time of 2:50 was Cornell's shortest since a 2:43 game that resulted in a 14-8 loss to Georgetown on Homecoming in 2019.
  • In its last three games, the Cornell defense has surrendered just xx first downs to the opposition.
  • After running 90 offensive plays a week ago against Penn (the most in a game by a Big Red team since 2008), Cornell's offense snapped the ball just 63 times (its fewest in a win since running just 58 in a 3-0 victory over Columbia on Nov. 14, 2015).

Player Notes

  • Freshman Davon Kiser's 91-yard kickoff return touchdown made him the first Big Red player with a scoring return on a kickoff since Rashad Campbell at Princeton in 2011 (78 yards).
  • It was the longest kick return score since 2007 when Shane Kilcoyne took a 94-yarder to the house against Columbia, the last time a Cornell player had a kickoff return touchdown in front of the Schoellkopf crowd.
  • The return was the 20th in school history to come back for a touchdown, the 13th of at least 90 yards and the second ever by a freshman (2006, Bryan Walters vs. Penn).
  • Senior Thomas Glover registered his 100th career catch, becoming the 14th player in school history to reach that mark.
  • His 1,273 receiving yards is good for 17th and he will enter his final collegiate game just 14 yards shy of jumping up into the top 15.
  • Brody Kidwell posted three tackles for loss, the most by a Big Red player this season and the most since Jake Stebbins posted 3.0 against Princeton on Oct. 29, 2021.
  • Senior Paul Lewis III had two pass breakups, including on the game-winning play, to give him 11 for the season. That total leads the conference and is tied for fourth all-time in a single season at Cornell.
  • Sophomore Robert Tucker III's rushing touchdown in the second quarter was the first of his career.
  • Freshman James Reinbold made his collegiate debut on special teams.
  • Senior Jake Stebbins added four tackles to bring his career total to 222 (No. 19 all-time at Cornell), while his one tackle for loss gives him 19.0 (24th).
  • Junior Jackson Kennedy put all four of his kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks.
  • With two PATs without a miss, Kennedy extended Cornell's streak of consecutive made PAT kicks to 58 (and his personal streak to 23).
