#6 Women’s Squash Sweeps #13 William Smith, Improves to 4-0

GENEVA, N.Y. – Seven Cornell players registered straight-set victories, aiding the No. 6-ranked Big Red to a 9-0 victory over the No. 13-ranked William Smith Herons at the Smith Squash Center on Wednesday evening.

Aishwarya Khubchandani (No. 2), Ananya Dabke (No. 3), Lily Zelov (No. 4), Alysa Ali (No. 5), Alexis Shatzman (No. 6), Devon Shatzman (No. 8), and McKenna Stoltz (No. 9) were those who claimed the straight-set wins for Cornell, aiding the Big Red to its best four-match start to a season since the 2014-15 season.

Cornell has yet to lose a match this season, as the team has a combined 36-0 record over its four matches played this season. Of the 36 matches played, only three have not been straight-set victories.

Wen Li Lai opened her match at the top spot with Rafaela Albuja with an 11-9 victory. Albuja countered with an 11-4 victory in the second set to even the match. Lai would go on to win the next two sets by 11-5 scores, improving to 4-0 on the year from the No. 1 spot on the ladder.

Ania LaDow avenged dropping the first set to Lark Ervasti, 11-9, by controlling the remainder of the match and winning the next three sets to claim the victory, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7.

No. 7 Match: Ania LaDow def. Lark Ervasti, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7.
No. 8 Match: Devon Shatzman def. Jada Smith-Padmore, 11-2, 11-8, 11-7.
No. 9 Match: McKenna Stoltz def. Jessica Finnerty, 11-5, 11-5, 11-3.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will return to the court in the new year when the Big Red will vie for a 5-0 start to the season when it squares off against Ivy League foe Penn on Friday, Jan. 13. Start time between the Big Red and Quakers is slated for 2 p.m. Game action will be aired lived on Stretch Internet.
