NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's Paolo Carroll scored in the seventh minute only to be countered by a Brandon Morales penalty kick in the 15th minute as the Bulldogs (6-4-4, 1-3-1 Ivy) and the No. 15-ranked Cornell men's soccer team (12-3-1, 4-1-1 Ivy) played to a 1-1 draw at Reese Stadium on Saturday evening.
"It was a great game with two good teams, and it could prove to be a significant point in our challenge for the Ivy League title and also our pursuit for the postseason," said John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer. "This is a tough place to come and play, and I thought we did a good job creating opportunities and also stood tall when we needed to."
Carroll opened the scoring early in the contest following a Yale corner kick. The ball deflected off the head of three different players before Carroll knocked the ball down inside the 8-yard box and got a shot off before a leaping Ryan Friedberg could get a hand on the ball. Sam Harshe and Quanah Brayboy were credited with the assists on the tally.
Morales netted the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 15th minute after he was tripped up inside the 18-yard box by Yale's TJ Presthus.
For the remaining 75 minutes, both teams kept each other's offenses at bay. Yale kept Cornell's potent offense in-check by blocking five of the Big Red's remaining 10 shot attempts. Cornell ended up blocking four of Yale's nine shot attempts.
Bulldogs goalkeeper Elian Haddock made two saves, stopping shots by Morales and junior defender Kisa Kiingi. Friedberg stood strong in the goal for Cornell, making three of his game-high four saves in the second half.
Cornell concludes the 2022 season with a road record of 8-1-1, marking the most road wins in a season since going 9-1-0 in 2018.
"To finish our road record at 8-1-1 is remarkable. We will work forward to wrapping up our regular season against a strong Columbia side next Saturday."
