Beyond The Box Score: The Penn Game

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Here are some notes from Cornell's 28-21 loss to Penn on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Schoellkopf Field.
 

Team Notes

  • Cornell's 90 offensive players were the most in a single game since also running 90 in a 2008 contest vs. Princeton (33 rushing, 57 passing).
  • The team's 10 first downs surrendered were fewest in a loss since Dartmouth also had 10 in a 20-17 defeat on Oct. 23, 1999. 
  • For the second straight week, the Big Red doubled its opponents first down total (22-10).
  • The Big Red's 134 rushing yards came against the fifth-ranked run defense in the country (Penn was allowing just 80.1 yards per game on the ground entering the contest).
  • Cornell posted 35:29 in possession time, marking the sixth time in eight contests the Big Red won the TOP battle.
  • The Big Red has lost its past two games despite having 35 minutes or more of possession in each, something it has done just 11 times total in school history.
  • Cornell had 23 third down attempts, tied for the second most in a game in school history with a 1999 game at Penn. The record is 25 against Columbia in 2005.
     

Player Notes

  • Jameson Wang's 53-yard run in the fourth quarter was a career long and the longest by a Big Red player since Harold Coles went 58 yards against Columbia on Nov. 23, 2019.
  • Wang has accounted for 27 career touchdowns (12 rushing, 15 passing), already ranking him 12th in school history and two from reaching the top 10. 
  • Javonni Cunningham's 60-yard kickoff return was the longest by a Big Red player since David Jones returned a kick 61 yards at Princeton on Oct. 28, 2017 and the longest at Schoellkopf Field since Bryan Walters posted a 63-yarder against Bucknell on Sept. 19, 2009.
  • Manny Adebi blocked his third kick of the past two weeks and fourth of the season against the Bison, matching the single-season record of four set by Ed Groszewski in 1991.
  • Jake Stebbins added seven tackles to his total to give him 218 - good for 19th in school history.
  • Thomas Glover upped his career totals to 97 catches for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns - totals that rank 17th in both catches and yards, and 18th in TDs in school history.
  • Glover posted his second career two-touchdown outing, also grabbing two scores vs. Brown in 2021.
  • His nine catches against Penn were the most by a Big Red player since Phazione McClurge had nine grabs at Dartmouth on Nov. 16, 2019.
  • Connor Morgan's seven tackles were a career best.
  • With his two pass breakups, Paul Lewis III now has nine this season, good for 17th on the school's single-season list. He needs two more to jump all the way to fourth.
  • Jeremiah Lewis notched his first career sack.
  • Malin White earned his first career start.
