ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team will attempt to defend its place in the national rankings at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a non-league match at the University of Rochester before weekend trip to Philadelphia for a makeup match against top-ranked Penn at noon Sunday.
In which
Humza Khan won his match at the #8 position, the Big Red is coming off an 8-1 loss to fifth-ranked Princeton on Friday to move to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in Ivy League play. Cornell was then originally scheduled to compete against Penn on Sunday, but the match was postponed due to a winter storm that hindered travel along the East Coast.
Though the loss against Princeton likely will not threaten Cornell's placement of seventh in the College Squash Association's rankings, Wednesday's match could if the Big Red is upset by 10th-ranked U of R (1-4). The Big Red continues to be aligned with one of the final berths for the Potter Cup – the top division of the CSA National Championships – with just two weeks left in the season.
Veer Chotrani (#1) and
Charles Culhane (#4) are both 4-4, and
Rohan Iyer (#9) is 3-3 to lead the Big Red.
Even though Rochester is in a different league, the Yellowjackets are the most common opponent in Cornell's program history. The Big Red holds a dominating 56-20 advantage in the all-time series, though Rochester has won 10 of last 11 meetings.
The Big Red then wraps up Ivy League competition Sunday at Penn (14-0, 4-0), which sits atop the national rankings. The Quakers haven't conceded more than two points in any of its matches this season. Cornell is 21-43 all-time against Penn.
The match against the Quakers will be available through subscription-based Ivy League Network, which is powered by Stretch Internet.
Live scoring for both matches will also be available through the CSA's website, csasquash.com.
