ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's tennis team will look to get back to winning ways this weekend when it hosts three matches at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red plays host to Nebraska at 2 p.m. Saturday before a Sunday doubleheader that starts with a 1 p.m. match against St. John's before a 5 p.m. nightcap against Binghamton at 5 p.m.
Cornell (8-3) has been streaky to start its dual season, rattling off eight straight victories before more recently losing three in a row – the latest of which came in form of a 4-3 setback against 41st-ranked Vanderbilt on Feb. 27 in Boston. The Big Red started off by securing the doubles point, then freshman
Radu Papoe and junior
Vladislav Melnic won Cornell's two singles points. The Big Red is now tabbed 61st in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings. Senior
Alafia Ayeni is ranked 33rd in singles and teams with Melnic to make the nation's 31st-ranked doubles tandem.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting between Cornell and Nebraska, with the Big Red leading the series 2-1. The Huskers are on a six-match losing streak after a defeat to #27 Pepperdine last Thursday.
The Big Red is 18-1 against St. John's, which opens its weekend with a home match against Drexel. The Red Storm has split its first two matches against Ivy League opponents this year, defeating Yale on Feb. 12, 5-2, before suffering a 4-2 loss to Dartmouth on Feb. 26. Binghamton is 1-10 and has lost four straight heading into its Saturday match at Buffalo – though all of those matches came down to the wire with 4-3 final scores. Cornell is 27-3 all-time against the Bearcats.
Cornell was also originally scheduled to compete against Colgate on Saturday afternoon, but that match has since been canceled.
