ITHACA, N.Y — The Cornell men's tennis team's final preparation before the start of Ivy League play takes it to The Sunshine State this weekend, where it will take on VCU at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and USF at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa.
The Big Red, which sits 61st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings, has won its last three matches — including a Sunday doubleheader sweep of Western Michigan and Bucknell. The freshman duo of Nathan Mao and Adit Sinah delivered a key doubles victory from the #2 spot against 66th-ranked Western Michigan before rolling in singles with straight-set victories from freshmen Jack McCarthy and Radu Papoe. The last surge came from seniors Pietro Rimondini and Evan Bynoe.
Saturday's neutral-site match against a rested squad from VCU (9-6) that has been idle since a 7-0 victory over UT Chattanooga on March 11. The Commodores have won five of their last six matches, with the one setback coming against an Ivy League foe — Princeton. USF (8-8) is ranked 65th, coming off of a loss to #42 SMU on Sunday. This weekend is the eighth meeting between Cornell and VCU, with the series favoring VCU, 4-3. Sunday is only the second meeting between the Big Red and the Bulls, with USF defeating Cornell 7-0 in 2008.
