Diakomihalis Named EIWA Wrestler of the Year, Runner-Up For Hodge Trophy

ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the third time in his career, junior Yianni Diakomihalis has been named the EIWA Wrestler of the Year. Diakomihalis ties four-time NCAA champ and Big Red legend Kyle Dake '13 as the conference's only three-time Wrestler of the Year.

Diakomihalis, who earlier in the day was named the Dan Hodge Trophy runner-up as the top collegiate wrestler in the country, claimed the 149-pound national title to cap off an unbeaten 2021-22 season (28-0). Diakomihalis won 16 matches with bonus points attached and posted a 14-0 record in dual meets. He previously won NCAA titles in 2018 and 2019 at 141 pounds. Now a three-time Ivy League and EIWA Wrestler of the Year selection, Diakomihalis ran through the NCAA bracket after claiming an Eastern title with three bonus point wins, two over nationally ranked opponents.

The school's all-time leader in win percentage (.989, 94-1) enters his final season sporting a 75-match win streak, two shy of Dake's career-ending record of 77 consecutive wins. The two-time Hodge Trophy finalist is a three-time Eastern champion and first-team All-Ivy League pick. Diakomihalis led three Big Red All-Americans at the 2022 NCAA Championships as Cornell finished seventh as a team.

Minnesota's NCAA champion heavyweight and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was awarded the Hodge Trophy.
