VESTAL, N.Y. -- The only thing that quieted the Cornell bats as darkness as the Big Red rallied past Binghamton 11-8 on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Big Red led 11-10 after three innings in game two before conditions were no longer safe to play in. The Big Red improved to 5-11, while the Bearcats slipped to 12-12.
Cornell rallied from five runs down in both games, taking its offensive frustrations out by scoring 21 runs over a six-inning span. Though the stats from game two won't count, they do show an upward trend for an offense that has been showing signs of breaking out.
Game One
It was 6-1 Binghamton after four with the only Big Red run a solo homer by
Hanna Crist before the Cornell bats came alive. And when they did ...
The Big Red scored 10 runs over the final three frames, including a five-run seventh that surged the visitors into the lead. Crist,
Emily McKinney and
Emily Muniz all went yard in game one, with McKinney smashing a three-run shot in the fifth and Muniz driving a two-run shot to center to give Cornell some insurance in the seventh.
McKinney, Crist and
Olivia Rooney each went 3-for-4 in the game as the Big Red pounded out a season-high 13 hits. Crist added three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base to her stat line and homered in her third consecutive game and for the fourth time in five contests.
Mia Burd earned the win in the circle after hurling 1.1 innings of perfect relief for the Big Red.
Maxine McCraw went the first 5.2 innings, surrendering 10 hits and eight runs while striking out four.
Game Two
Binghamton catapulted out to a 5-0 lead in the first before Cornell got four runs back in the second and then scored seven in the third. The Bearcats plated five in the bottom half of the inning, but the lack of light started to take a toll. There were seven errors in three innings between the teams.
Allison Kerce was on her way to a big game with a 3-for-3 effort with a double and four RBI, while
Hanna Crist stayed hot with two hits and an RBI, with
Lilly Travieso also collecting two hits before the game was called.
