Travieso, Burd Lift Softball Past Ivy Leader Princeton, 2-1

PRINCETON, N.J. -- A pair of Lilly Travieso RBI singles was enough for Mia Burd as the Cornell softball team topped Ivy League leader Princeton 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Princeton Softball Stadium. The Big Red improved to 9-15 (3-6 Ivy), while the Tigers fell to 15-13 (8-4 Ivy).

Burd went the distance in the circle to pick up her fifth win of the season, scattering five hits and two walks while allowing just one run. It was enough to overcome a three-headed Princeton pitching corps that punched out 12 Big Red hitters, but allowed single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Cornell used some two-out magic in the fourth with consecutive singles bu Olivia Rooney and Travieso after Hanna Crist was hit by a pitch to make it 1-0. The Tigers tied it up with two walks and a run-scoring single in the fifth, but the Big Red plated the go-ahead run in the sixth and Burd shut the Tigers down over their final six outs.

A single by Maicie Levitt to open the sixth was followed bu a double down the leftfield line by Rooney. Travieso's grounder got through the right side to make it 2-1 on the first pitch she saw and the last thrown by Molly Chambers, who came on in relief of starter Ali Blanchard. Burd retired Princeton 1-2-3 in the sixth and worked around a one-out single in the seventh with the ball never leaving the infield after the runner reached.

Travieso was 2-for-3 with both RBI, while Rooney was 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the Big Red offense, which had a series high seven hits and scored its first runs of the weekend against Princeton. The Big Red was also flawless in 39 fielding chances, including 18 assists - the fifth-most in a single game in school history.

Cornell returns home for a three-game set against Harvard beginning on Saturday, April 16 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field.
