ITHACA, N.Y. -- Hot off wins against Yale and Brown, the Cornell men's tennis team will attempt to keep its hat in the ring for the Ivy League title when it travels to New Jersey to take on No. 39 Princeton on Friday, April 22 at 2 p.m. The Big Red returns home on Sunday, April 24 to compete against No. 42 Penn at 1 p.m. at the Ithaca Reis Center.
The Big Red pulled off an away win over Yale on Saturday afternoon when the No. 34-ranked duo of Alafia Ayeni and Vlad Melnic rallied to earn the doubles point after dropping the first completed match from the No. 2 spot. Cornell went on to claim three of the four singles points, including No. 42 Ayeni's victory over No. 114 Michael Sun.
Continuing its momentum from the victory over Yale, the Big Red swept Brown 4-0 on Sunday thanks to straight-set wins at No. 1, 2, and 6. Ayeni and Melnic picked up a doubles win to accompany their singles wins, while Nathan Mao's victory from the final singles spot clinched the victory.
A sweep of Brown completed the ideal away weekend for the Big Red, keeping its title hopes alive. Cornell is ranked third in the standings, with a game in hand over this weekend's opponents Penn and tied in league wins (three) with next weekend's opponent Columbia. Ivy unbeaten Harvard currently sits in first.
No. 39 Princeton (17-7) is coming off a split weekend of league play, falling to No. 13 Harvard on Saturday but triumphing over Dartmouth on Sunday. The Tigers earned a win over the Big Red in February during the ECAC Indoor Championships, bringing its series lead over Cornell to 94-13-1.
No. 42 Penn (17-5) is also fresh off of a split weekend, rallying against Dartmouth on Saturday but falling to Ivy unbeaten Harvard on Sunday. Cornell's last matchup against the Quakers came in the 2018-19 season when the Big Red prevailed, diminishing the narrow lead that Penn has in the all-time series against Cornell. Penn holds a 46-43-1 lead in the all-time series.
